Activity 1: What are the causes and effects of
water pollution?
Classify the terms and ideas
Work in groups of 3 or 4
The groups must be heterogeneous

1. What are the causes and effects of water pollution?
2. What are the major water pollution problems in streams and lakes?
3. What are the major pollution problems affecting groundwater and other
drinking water sources?
4. What are the major water pollution problems affecting oceans?
5. How can we best deal with water pollution?
Work in groups of 5
Each group member will be an expert on one of the five previously listed
topics.
Each group member will have to explain to their group what their key concept
is and can only use a piece of index card the size of a stamp to write cues.
5 minutes before the end of class there will be an exit quiz.

Share out the EPA Drinking Water and Health report
Each group member will receive a piece of plain paper and is responsible for
summarizing 5 key points in his/her section.
All work will be mounted and displayed
Water treatment: Lab Prep
In this lab you will learn a filtration technique using Activated Charcoal
Work in your lab group and do the following in preparation of the lab
1. Find 6 uses for activated charcoal (reference articles around the lab)
2. Sequences your steps so that you can execute the lab in 45 minutes.
3. Note you will test 2 juices (one red, one white)
Solve the Problem:
Purifying Swamp water
Look at the Water Filtration hand-out.
Engineer a set up that allows you to purify the swamp water and make it
irrigation water quality.
Use a share-board to draw and label your design
