Books Carlton, Jim. Apple: The Inside Story of Intrigue, Egomania, and Business Blunders. New York: Times Business/Random House, 1997. Print. This book was written by Wall Street journalist Jim Carlton, and records a detailed history of the super-company Apple Inc. This book provided material on the roots of Apple, as well as the effect of the unveiling of the Macintosh (arguably one of Apple’s greatest triumphs). The opening chapters illustrate how revolutionary the release of the Macintosh computer was, beginning with its introduction in 1984. With its sleek design and pleasant demeanor, the Mac’s would become the standard look of future computers. In fact, nearly all computers following its release bear striking resemblance to it. The Mac also introduced the mouse, a feature that quickly made typing complicated commands in code obsolete. It was truly, as Jobs had promised, the computer for “all the others”. The Macintosh was so popular with the general public that it had a 10 year advantage over all other computer products. The book goes back to the origins of Apple, describing the collaboration of Jobs and Wozniak to create their company. The beginning chapters of Apple: the Inside Story of Intrigue, Egomania, and Business Blunders helped us to understand how truly revolutionary the creation of Apple and then the Macintosh was, and how it affected technology and the public’s view of it forever. Linzmayer, Owen W.. Apple Confidential: The Real Story of Apple Computer, Inc.. San Francisco, Calif.: No Starch Press, 1999. Print. This book was written by Owen Linzmayer, a user-interface/interaction consultant who moonlights as a freelance writer for magazines, product reviews, and documentation. Apple Confidential looks beyond the mainstream, “official” history of the company to reveal little details no one knew. Its opening chapter, “The Forgotten Founder”, details the founding of the company by Stephan Gary Wozniak and Steven Paul Jobs, in a bedroom of 11161 Crist Drive in Los Altos, California. It goes on to describe the creations of the first products and eventually the fall of the company from mismanagement and a series of coups. It then describes Apple’s rebound to popularity and profitability. This book allowed us to understand that the makings of a great company are not without trials and difficulties, and not everything is recorded in its history. It also gave us great insight into the personal lives of the early founders. Photographs Steve Jobs and Wozniak holding an Apple I prototype. N.d. N/A, N/A. Digital Trends. Web. 5 Dec. 2011.
