High School Graduation Plan Understanding House Bill 5 and how it affects me! House Bill 5 What is it and what is the purpose? There are two main purposes of HB-5 • Reduce the number of state end-of-course assessments required for high school students to graduate. • Allow high school students greater flexibility in choosing their courses while maintaining academic rigor. The new graduation plans and changes to credit requirements go into effect with the freshman class of 2014-15. Graduation Requirements Distinguished Level of Achievement Plan Foundation High School Program + Endorsements + 5 EOCs = Students will earn a Foundation High School Program Diploma and declare an endorsement area. Cut out the foldable and the title. 5. Cut along the double-jagged line. 6. Fold as required. 7. Glue to page 51. You can change an endorsement, if your career decisions change. Endorsements Where will my endorsement classes take place? • Mansfield ISD provides a large selection of Career Technical Education (CTE) courses. • Some courses are on the regular high school campus. • A majority of the courses are offered at Ben Barber Career Tech Academy. • Admission to these programs is based on diverse criteria. • These courses provide students the potential for college credit, industry level training, certifications, and internships that can be aligned with students’ career pathway preferences. There are T WO ways to enhance your high school diploma – Distinguished Achievement and Performance Acknowledgement Distinguished Achievement Must complete the Foundation HS Plan with Endorsement Must complete Algebra II To be considered for the state’s Top 10% automatic admission to colleges. Performance Acknowledgement For outstanding performance: Dual Credit Bilingual or Biliterate AP Exam PSAT, ACT-Plan, ACT, or SAT Business or Industry Certificate
