Beaver Valley Intermediate Unit (BVIU) K-12 Online Courses
The following K-12 asynchronous online courses are being offered through BVIU for 6-12
grade school students. All of the courses are aligned with appropriate PK-12 and online
teaching and learning standards. Instructors are highly qualified and differentiate the
instruction to the level of the student.
You can take one or more courses at the same time. You can study online anytime 24/7,
within the limits of the course. There is a weekly structure of study and assignments
(reading, writing, researching, exploring, discussing, etc.) in the course. Courses are
flexible to fit the needs of the student for scheduling conflicts, current level of
knowledge, experiences, vacation etc.
You can register on the BVIU website, www.bviu.org, at the course registration link,
found on the homepage. The tuition is $95 each course (except SAT Prep courses, which

Course Descriptions
1. SAT Reading and SAT Mathematics ($125 for each SAT Prep course): Build the skills
and confidence you need with BVIU’s SAT Online Prep Course which includes both verbal and math
practice at an extremely affordable price. BVIU offers prep courses to help students excel in the SATs.
We combine SAT Verbal and Math practice strategies with carefully prepared course content. We give
students the tools they need to succeed on this exam. Our services build better test taking strategies and
prepares students for critical reading, vocabulary, grammar and essay writing. In addition to SAT verbal
practice, this program includes separate math instruction in the areas of Pre-Algebra, Algebra, and
Geometry. Register now for Reading AND/OR Mathematics. ***Please note that these are separate
courses and you will need to register for each course, Reading or Mathematics, separately. ***
2. Study Skills: This online six-week (1) credit course designed to prepare students for the coming school
year. Some of the most basic study skills can mean the difference between success and failure in the
classroom. Designed to develop basic learning strategies and skill development, students will focus on
requisite learning skills to better prepare them for attending either middle school or high school. The
material will enable students to develop learning strategies, critical0thinking, test0taking, and
provlem0olving skills to enhance their performance in both academic and nonacademic endeavors. The
content also includes learning strategies, time management, and organizational skills, as well as
strategies for acquiring, storing, and retrieving information. It will also include note-taking skills to include
strategies for oral and written communication. Students will also concentrate on linking new information
with prior knowledge. Special needs students will benefit from the course content. This academic skills
course will further contribute to any student’s academic success.
3. English Language Arts 8: This course covers the PA core for English Language Arts grade 8. It
includes non-fiction articles, fiction works such as The Lord of the Flies, and writing instruction. All
materials are provided for this course.
4. Life Science (Enrichment & Remediation): Get an edge on your Life Science class by
enrolling in BVIU’s online Life Science course this fall. This six week dual purpose enrichment &
remediation course is completely online and is designed to meet the learning needs of middle grade and
high school students. Weekly units investigate cells, heredity and evolution, simple organisms and fungi,
plants, animals, human health and ecology. This course also serves as a great refresher for students
about to enter Biology, one of the Keystone assessment subjects. In addition, alternate assessments can
be given to students with particular religious backgrounds and/or special needs. Minimum of 8 students to
hold the class.
5. Astronomy (Enrichment): Are you a wannabe backyard astronomer or big thinker? Are you
considering a career or hobby in astronomy or a related field? Sing up for BVIU’s six week astronomy
class. You will learn all the basics: star formation, life & death, the earth-moon-sun system, and galaxies
and beyond. You will also have the chance to ask some of life’s biggest questions about space and time –
and share your own thoughts and ideas in a safe and supportive environment. Please note that while this
course takes a scientific approach to astronomy, alternate assessments can be given to students with
particular religious backgrounds and/or special needs. Minimum of 8 students to hold the class.
6. Chinese: This is a beginning level course that introduces variety of themes of Mandarin Chinese to
students who are interested in exploring what Chinese Language is like. Skills of speaking, listening,
reading and writing will be introduced in this course. Chinese culture, current events and facts will be
sprinkled throughout the course in an attempt to help the learner focus on the Chinese speaking world
and the people. The knowledge and awareness can benefit all learners.
