In-Class Work 1.2 Cell Analogy Project 11th DP Biology Dr. Fritz DU Student Name: Partner: Candidate Number: 49071Date Turned In: DUE DATE: Wed. Sept. 10, 2014 The worksheet must be completed by hand. You should work with a partner on this assignment. Only one worksheet per pair should be turned in. Topic 1.2: Eukaryotic Cells – Cell Analogy Project Objective: Your goal is to create an analogy that relates to a eukaryote cell. Your final product is a story about something that has similarities to a cell’s structure. There are 8 main parts to an animal cell. You must assign each cell part to a component of the analogy and explain what the cell part does and how it performs a similar function in the analogy. Cell Parts 1. Cell Membrane: 2. Lysosomes: 3. Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum: 4. Ribosomes: 5. Cytoplasm: 6. Golgi Apparatus: 7. Mitochondria: 8. Nucleus: Definition of Analogy: a similarity between things that are otherwise unlike. For example, the motor in a car is analogous to a power plant, since both are used to produce power. Synonyms: resemblance, similarity, comparison, and metaphor. Topics: Every group needs to have their own analogy. No two analogies can be the same. To start, your topic needs to be complex. Second, it is easier if it is a thing. Example topics: castle, mall, Hogwarts, Bikini Bottom, school, NYC, concert hall, car, football stadium, cruise ship, hospital, USA, restaurant, factory, etc. An Analogy Example: A eukaryote cell can be compared to a house. The outside walls are like the cell membrane. The front and back doors are like channel proteins. The satellite dish is like a receptor protein. The kitchen is like the ribosomes. The halls and stairs are like the endoplasmic reticulum. The mailbox is like the Golgi apparatus. The food produced by the kitchen is like the proteins. The furnace of the house is like the mitochondria. Last, the people inside the house are like the nucleus. RUBRIC: Analogy is clear, accurate and well presented. 10 pts Evidence is provided that both partners completed the project together. 10 pts. The role of each of the 8 cell components are defined both in the cell and in the analogy. 80 pts Our Analogy Topic is: ____________________________________________ 1. Cell Membrane is like: ____________________________________________ Because: 2. Lysosomes are like: ____________________________________________ Because: 3. Cytoplasm is like: ____________________________________________ Because: 4. Ribosomes are like: ____________________________________________ Because: 5. Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum is like: ____________________________________________ Because: 6. Golgi Apparatus is like: ____________________________________________ Because: 7. Mitochondria are like: ____________________________________________ Because: 8. Nucleus is like: Because: ____________________________________________
