The first annual SLO Mini Maker Faire is scheduled for Saturday, May 11, 2013 from 11am to 3pm at Mission Plaza in downtown San Luis Obispo. The San Luis Obispo Museum of Art is excited to host the Mini Maker Faire in collaboration with Central Coast STEM Collaborative (science, technology, engineering, mathematics), iFixit.com, and students and faculty from Cal Poly Materials Engineering Department, Architecture Department, Liberal Arts and Engineering Studies Program, Expressive Technology Studios, and the Science Café at Cal Poly’s Kennedy Library. The Call for Makers, Performers and Presenters is open now through March 9, 2013. Any groups or individuals interested in participating in this inaugural event should complete the simple application at makerfaireslo.wordpress.com. The SLO Mini Maker Faire takes after its enormous parent event, Maker Faire, which will host more than 100,000 visitors in San Mateo on May 18 & 19, 2013. The SLO Mini Maker Faire will be a smaller, community-focused event, but will follow the Maker Faire model of celebrating do-it-yourself creativity and tinkering. Featuring both established and emerging local “makers,” the SLO Mini Maker Faire is a family-friendly celebration. It will feature maker booths and interactive demonstrations and performances, including an Arduino-powered Cal Poly Science Café event with Michael Newman. Some of the types of entries proposed for the SLO Mini Maker Faire are robotics, electronics, arts and crafts, unusual tools or machines, green tech, sustainability, energy efficiency, bicycles, puppets, toys, projects using repurposed materials, and how to fix things or take them apart. Maker Faire began in 2005 in San Mateo, California by the people behind MAKE and CRAFT magazines. Maker Faire has also appeared in Austin, Detroit and New York City. Mini Maker Faires have started to sprout up around the United States, including events in Ann Arbor, Sebastopol, Aspen, Kansas City, and Boston.
