What does God say about “samesex marriage”? • We are all human beings, made in God’s image, yet fallen. We must not dehumanize those who engage in homosexual practices • We are all sexual beings; either male or female. This is a core part of our identity and we must deal sensitively with it What does God say about “samesex marriage”? • We are all sinners. Every part of our being has been tainted & twisted by sin, including our sexuality For the creation was subjected to futility…in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. Romans 8:20-21 What does God say about “samesex marriage”? …Just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire. Jude 7, ESV What does God say about “samesex marriage”? For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another… Romans 1:26-27, ESV What does God say about “samesex marriage”? …The law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who strike their fathers and mothers, for murderers, the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers, liars, perjurers and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine… 1 Timothy 1:9-10, ESV What does God say about “samesex marriage”? Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 What does God say about “samesex marriage”? We all need a savior. Jesus Christ alone is capable of restoring all of us to sexual sanity And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. 1 Corinthians 6:11, ESV What does God say about “samesex marriage”? • Homosexuality is not the unforgiveable sin (Matthew 12, Mark 3) What does God say about “samesex marriage”? Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had take out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.” What does God say about “samesex marriage”? For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. The man and his wife were both naked and they felt no shame. Genesis 2:22-25, NIV What does God say about “samesex marriage”? What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate. Mark 10:9, ESV This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. Ephesians 5:32, NIV What does God say about “samesex marriage”? • Marriage as designed by God is – Heterosexual: a man and a woman – Monogamous: one man and one woman – Primary: stronger than parent/child – Permanent: cleave to each other (Mark 10:9) – A signpost pointing us toward a greater reality What should we say to those who don’t accept the Bible? Same sex couples are just as fit to love and raise children as opposite sex couples Biblical marriage is a wise acknowledgement of the distinct differences between men and women, and reinforces the truth that both sexes bring irreplaceable gifts to family life. Same sex couples are just as fit to love and raise children as opposite sex couples It is a tragedy when a child loses a mother or a father due to accident or disease. Samesex “marriage” advocates are asking society to purposely and permanently deprive children of either a mother or a father. Marriage is defined by values (love, respect) not gender In all cultures and throughout all times, marriage has been between one man and one woman who love and respect each other. No culture has defined marriage in a same-sex way. Marriage is defined by values (love, respect) not gender In all cultures and throughout all times, marriage has been the way children are generated and nurtured. R-74 uncouples children from a mother and father who will teach them about gender and be responsible for them. Homosexuals should be able to marry anyone they love, like heterosexuals • A person cannot marry someone who is already married. • Someone who is already married cannot find a third, fourth, or fifth person to marry, whether the person “loves” all of those additional parties or not. Homosexuals should be able to marry anyone they love, like heterosexuals • A person cannot marry a close blood relative • A person cannot marry a minor R-74 is needed to grant same-sex couples equal rights No new rights are granted to same-sex couples who are registered as domestic partnerships with the state. They currently have all the rights of marriage granted by Washington. Jesus never said a thing about homosexuality • Nor did He say anything about incest or polygamy. Silence does not mean neutrality or acceptance. • Jesus didn’t come to abolish the O.T. regulations but to fulfill them (Matthew 5:17-20) How does my same-sex marriage hurt you? When marriage is redefined, everyone must succumb to the new definition. Anyone who disagrees is at odds with the law, and will face legal consequences as has happened in other states. How does my same-sex marriage hurt you? Chick-Fil-A was threatened with being blacklisted in many cities. The mayor of the District of Columbia (where same-sex marriage was imposed by their legislature) said, “there is just no place for them (supporters of biblical marriage) in this city.” How does my same-sex marriage hurt you? Attacks on marriage have already had a devastating effect on adoption services, family law, divorce law, child custody, public schools, religious freedom, free speech, and rights of conscience Children do just as well in samesex marriages Social science research and thousands of years of history show that children do best when raised by their married mother and father. Churches won’t be forced to perform or recognize same-sex unions Religious freedom and free speech will be harmed in numerous ways that stop short of forcing churches to perform ceremonies. A church could be forced to rent an adjacent hall or room for same-sex “marriage”. A pastor could be criminally charged with “hate speech” (as has occurred in Sweden) for preaching on homosexual behavior. Denying same-sex couples their fundamental rights is racial bigotry There is no comparison between the good of marriage and the evil of racism. Don’t try to equate the hard-fought victories of the civil rights struggle with the attempt to impose a redefinition of marriage on society. Race doesn’t matter when it comes to marriage. Gender does. In order for there to even be a marriage, by definition, both a man and a woman must be involved. Marriage is color-blind, but can’t be gender-blind. Why are you against equal rights for homosexuals? • We are for marriage. We are not “against” anyone. • Same-sex “marriage” advocates are not asking for “equal rights”… rather they are demanding that society as a whole be forced to embrace the idea that moms and dads are meaningless to children. Why do you want to make homosexuals second class citizens? The real second-class citizens become children whose need for both a mom and a dad are ignored in favor of adult selfinterest. A: Same-sex couples ALREADY enjoy full legal equality in Washington. Washington’s Domestic Partnership Act, the “Everything but Marriage” law was approved by voters in 2009 and provides full legal equality to same-sex couples. B: BOTH parents are necessary. Kids need a mom and dad and that's what the current definition of marriage recognizes. C: CONSEQUENCES are too much. The impact on children's education as well as the reduction in personal liberties and religious freedom are too much. What would God say to South Hill Bible Church? • • As Jesus’ representatives, we must model His attitude of forgiveness to all who are broken by sin: “I don’t condemn you.” As Jesus’ representatives, we must speak His word of hope to all who are broken by sin: “Go. Your future doesn’t have to be determined by your past.” What would God say to South Hill Bible Church? • • As Jesus’ representatives, we must speak His word of admonition to all who are trapped by sin: “Sin no more. What you’ve been doing is wrong.” God’s will is a return to Him and His design for human sexuality. Jesus alone offers hope and a future. What would God say to South Hill Bible Church? • Be sure the log is out of our own eyes before we try to get the speck out of someone else’s • As citizens of the USA, don’t fail to vote • If R-74 passes, don’t despair
