SUMMER ASSIGNMENT
Welcome to AP US History, this is a course designed to meet the requirements of a College Level Survey course.
This is a fast paced US History course where your reading and writing skills will be put to test. In order for the
APUSH class to complete the 270 years of US History by the AP Exam in May it is necessary for students enrolled
in Advanced Placement United States History to have completed the following assignments by the first week of
class in order to help expedite us through the Unit 1 Curriculum. (Due 2nd Day of School on Tuesday September
1st -good news no homework from Spring Break On!!).
NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR SUMMER HOMEWORK. QUIZ ON CHAPTER ONE WILL OCCUR
ON THE SECOND DAY OF SCHOOL,

ASSIGNMENT:
Our classroom text is GIVE ME LIBERTY by Eric Foner, for summer homework you will access this

1. Read Chapter 1 (Including Voices of Freedom)
2. Answer the following questions: (HANDWRITTEN)
a. Describe why the discovery of America was” one of the most important events recorded in
the history of mankind” according to Adam Smith
b. Define the Columbian Exchange and explain how North America became the location of
where East and West came together
c. Identify and explain the difference of Native Americans cultures of the various regions of
North America
d. What were the main factors fueling the European age of Exploration? Define mercantilism
e. Compare and contrast the different exploration motives and treatment of the Native
population of the French, Dutch and Spanish (make note of where they explored, for what,
who, colonies)
f. How would European explorers explain their superiority to Native Americans and justify
both the conquest of Native lands and terminating their freedom?
g. Using the Venn diagram on the next page: Compare and contrast European values and ways
of life to that of the Indians; consider religion, views on property ownership, gender
relations and views on freedom.
