Muscular System Differentiated Instruction Menu Chapter 8 Educational research proves that students learn in different ways. With this in mind, you will have an opportunity to select from various learning activities that best suit YOUR particular strengths and preferences as a student. Complete the student and parent agreement and place this sheet in your binder in the PRACTICE WORK section. Instructions: Each student will complete assignments that will reinforce and assess their mastery of learning and for learning regarding the Muscular System. Assignments are divided into three categories: Level A (assessments-labs & tests), Level B (assessments-project), Level C (practice-homework & classwork). Items with ** indicate that those assignments are mandatory in each level. In addition to the mandatory assignments, student will select assignments that result in the total number of required points without going over for level C. All work that is completed in paper format should be placed in the PRACTICE WORK section of your binder. Please work to obtain signatures DAILY. Projected portfolio completion date is __________ (Subject to change to meet the needs of the students) No signatures may be obtained on the final due date. Students should submit their unit menu and NO actual assignments upon portfolio collection. Agreements I understand that this unit requires more independent work than usual and I will utilize class time effectively to complete assignments. I understand that I will be responsible for bringing materials that are needed daily. I understand that if I do not adhere to the deadline given, I may be in jeopardy of not receiving credit for my assignments. Mandatory assignments (worth 100 pts). Student’s choice assignments (totaling 60 pts). Assignment (Daily Work) All illustrations, charts, and graphs should be in color and on lineless paper. All tables, charts, etc. should be original in design… do not copy tables or charts from the text book. Tables, graphs, pictorials may be electronic. 1. **Complete the Muscular System Notes** Print by hand, print out student notes, or type and save to your laptop. 2. **Complete “Juicy Jargon” for Chapter 8** (options: written in JJ spiral notebook, make a flip book/foldable/graphic organizer, flash cards, typed AND printed, etc. )** 3. Illustrate and label the parts of the Organization of Skeletal Muscle (Refer to page 176-177: Figures 8.2(b) Myofibril; 8.29(c) Details of Filaments; 8.3(a)One thick and one thin filament Include the following labels: ALL labels on each drawing 4. Create a graphic organizer that summarizes the general functions of muscle tissue. Include drawn or printed illustrations of each cell/tissue type. 5. Complete the graphic organizer about connective tissue coverings (components) of skeletal muscle tissue. Include on the 3 MAIN coverings Organizer is posted on the Evan-Williams DHS Anatomy page. 6. Read chapter 8 and answer the following questions (write questions or answer in complete sentences) pgs. 222-224: Self Quiz # 1-5; 8-12; 15-16; 18 7. Design a pictorial document that shows the seven classes of characteristics used to name skeletal muscles. The document should describe each classification type (each group) and include 3 examples of illustrations of muscles that belong to each group (except for those that do not have 3 examples). This assignment should be created using BYOT and printed, provide photo credits. (Refer to table 8.2) 8. Using a 3 part Venn Diagram, compare and contrast the three types of skeletal muscle tissue. 3 Part Venn Diagram is posted on the Evan-Williams DHS Anatomy page. 9. Write a 2-3 paragraph summary that explains the dependency of the muscular system on the nervous system. The following words must be included : Motor neuron, Neuromuscular junction, sarcolemma, synaptic bulb, Acetylcholine (ACh),action potential, Acetylcholinesterase Type and print, 12 point font; Be certain to check your spelling and grammar! 10. Create a T-Chart for athletes and gym goers that explains the effects of (1) Endurance-Aerobic Exercises and (2) Strength-Short Period Exercises. Use and explain the following terms: fast glycolytic fibers, slow oxidative fibers, hypertrophy 11. Create a flip book that summarizes the events of contraction and relaxation in a skeletal muscle fiber. (Refer to table 8.7) 12. Make flash cards for TWO of the following muscle groups: (1) muscles of mastication; (2) rotator cuff muscles; (3) quadriceps; or (4) hamstrings Put the muscle name on the front of the card and the muscle function/action on the back of the card. 13. Write a 3-5 paragraph comparison of the various ways (aerobic versus anaerobic) adenosine triphosphate (ATP) energy is produced for muscle contraction. Type and print, 12 point font; Be certain to check your spelling and grammar! 14. **Practice the Manipulative station: Connective Tissue Wrappings of Muscles**. Once you have mastered it, be able to recreate the demonstration for your teacher WITHOUT THE INSTRUCTIONS. Demos may be done in teams of 3 students, each person must present a section.
