THE
PROVIDENCE
BIRD
BLUE
JAY
Facts about
blue jays
Blue jays are actually gray but light refraction
causes the light to bend into a blue wavelength.
They are aggressive and will raid other birds'
nests, steal eggs, young birds, and even the
nests. They are omnivores and, when they hunt,
they hunt more than they can eat. Blue jays
catch ants and wipe them across their wing
feathers in a behavior called “anting.” It is
believed that the ant's formic acid may act as
an antiseptic on the blue jay's skin. Blue jays
can mimic the sound of other birds including the
scream of a red-shouldered hawk.
THE
FLOWER

the slipper orchids, which comprise
around 150 species from five genera,
are easily found from other orchids

the lower petal
THE
TREE
RED
OAK
Red oak facts
The red oak is one of the largest and most important
timber trees. One of the fastest growing of the oaks, it
attains a to 80 feet and a diameter of two to three
feet. It has a wide, spreading head with few far
reaching branches.
The fruit is a large, broad, rounded acorn with a very
shallow disk-like or saucer-shaped cup or cap.
The twigs are small, slender, greenish brown to dark
brown. On young branches the bark is smooth and gray
to greenish. On the trunk it breaks into long, narrow,
shallow ridges flat and smooth on top. The underbark is
light red.
Leaves:
•Contain tannin, a substance that makes the leaves
leathery and hinders decomposition.
•Dark red, fading to brown but may remain on the tree
well into the fall.
