We will use lecture, film, slides and discussion in order to develop a vocabulary and awareness of the arts. Required Reading: Preble’s Artforms by Patrick Frank, 10th ed. Catalog Description: The student will study Art from a variety of different backgrounds and cultures as both product and process. Aesthetic judgment making in evaluation of Art from different times and places is stressed. Grading: There are 1000 points available. *Attendance and Class Participation: 100 pts. *3 Assignments: 50 pts. each. *2 Quizzes: 100 pts. Each *Essay: 150 points. **Essay, 150 pts: We will take one day of class time and spend it at the Philbrook Museum. There, you will need to choose a work of art to write a three page essay about (12 pt. font, reproduction of art work not considered). Your essay paper must reflect your critical capabilities of discerning style, technique, and the cultural context of the piece. Will be graded as followed: Composition, strength of critique, and bibliography (at least 3 references). Please follow the Chicago or MLA style of citation. Your essay is due at the end of the course. *Midterm and Final Exams, 200 pts. each: multiple choice/true or false/short answers. Classroom Rules: No plagiarism. Be prompt. Extra Credit: limit 15 pts. *Students who submit a brief essay to the instructor describing their response to any of the artwork discussed during class can receive up to 3 bonus points. *Visit an online art museum and submit a short paper with a printed example of artwork for up to 3 bonus points. Academic dishonesty or misconduct is not condoned or tolerated at campuses within the Tulsa Community College system. Such disciplinary actions delegated to the faculty include, but are not limited to, the dismissal of disrespectful or disorderly students from classes. In the case of academic dishonesty a faculty member may: Require the student to redo an assignment or test, or require the student to complete a substitute assignment or test; Record a "zero" for the assignment or test in question; Recommend to the student that the student withdraw from the class, or administratively withdraw the student from the class; Record a grade of "F" for the student at the end of the semester.
