Course Objective: This course will introduce the student to the elements, principles,
media and brief history of visual artistic expression. We will use lecture, film, slides and
discussion in order to develop a vocabulary and awareness of the arts.
Required Reading: Preble’s Artforms, 10th ed.
Catalog Description: The student will study Art from a variety of different backgrounds
and cultures as both product and process. Aesthetic judgment making in evaluation of Art
from different times and places is stressed.
Grading: There are 1000 points available.
*Attendance and Class Participation: 100 pts.
*4 Assignments: 50 pts. each.
*2 Quizzes: 100 pts. each
**Essay, 100 pts: We will take one day of class time and spend it at the Philbrook
Museum. There, you will need to choose a work of art and write an essay (300
words) over it. Your essay paper will need to reflect your critical capabilities of
discerning style, technique, and the cultural context of the piece. Will be graded as
followed: Composition, strength of critique, and bibliography (at least 3 references).
*Midterm and Final Exams, 200 pts. each: multiple choice/true or false/short answers.
Classroom Rules:
No plagiarism. Be prompt. Be respectful to others in the classroom i.e. remain seated,
no talking out of turn, etc. Cell phones must be silenced during lecture-absolutely no
talking or texting. Laptops may be used but must be restricted to course enrichment.

Make-up and Late Assignment Policy
* Assignments turned in after due date will be graded as late (10 pt. deduction)
*The student will be allowed to make-up ONE exam. Scheduling arrangements should
be made with instructor before examination.
*The Philbrook essay will not be accepted after due date.

Extra Credit: limit 15 pts.
*Students who submit a brief essay to the instructor describing their response to any of
the artwork discussed during class can receive up to 3 bonus points.
*Visit an online art museum and submit a short paper with a printed example of artwork
for up to 3 bonus points. There are links available on Blackboard to several museums but
students are not limited to these.

10. Course Withdrawal: The deadline to withdraw from a course shall not exceed 3/4
the duration of any class. Contact the Counseling Office at any TCC campus to
initiate withdrawal from a course ('W' grade) or to change from Credit to Audit.
Check the TCC Academic Calendar for deadlines. Students who stop participating in
the course and fail to withdraw may receive a course grade of “F,” which may have
financial aid consequences for the student.
COMMUNICATIONS:
Email: All TCC students receive a designated “MyTCC” email address (ex:
jane.doe@mail.tulsacc.edu). All communications to you about TCC and course
assignments will be sent to your MyTCC email address; and you must use MyTCC email
to send email to, and receive email from, the instructor regarding this course.
Inclement Weather: TCC rarely closes. If extreme weather conditions or
emergency situations arise, TCC always gives cancellation notices to radio and television
stations. This information is also posted on the TCC website (www.tulsacc.edu).

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: Academic dishonesty (cheating) is defined as the
deception of others about one’s own work or about the work of another. Academic
dishonesty or misconduct is not condoned or tolerated at campuses within the Tulsa
Community College system. Tulsa Community College adopts a policy delegating certain
forms of authority for disciplinary action to the faculty. Such disciplinary actions
delegated to the faculty include, but are not limited to, the dismissal of disrespectful or
disorderly students from classes. In the case of academic dishonesty a faculty member
may:




Require the student to redo an assignment or test, or require the student to
complete a substitute assignment or test;
Record a "zero" for the assignment or test in question;
Recommend to the student that the student withdraw from the class, or
administratively withdraw the student from the class;
Record a grade of "F" for the student at the end of the semester. Faculty
may request that disciplinary action be taken against a student at the
administrative level by submitting such a request to the Dean of Student
Services.
