Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to— Explain the relationship that exist between people to their physical and cultural environments by emphasizing societal influence and economic and political structures Identify different types of maps and locating regions, countries and cultures Analyze information about a country to determine its cultural profile and ultimately develop a desire to honor cultural diversity while promoting cultural cooperation TEACHING METHODS: The instructor will employ the flowing methods to teach the subject matter: lectures, class presentations, guest speakers, Internet sites and audio tapes and field trips. EVALUATION TECHNIQUES: I. Grading System- A= 2250-2150 B=-2150-2000 C=2000-1850 D=1850-1700 F= Below 1700 Group Projects: All students assigned to group must present information and work on the Power Point together… Group Project- (400 pts total) Chapter Assignments (each group is assigned a chapter to discuss in class). The chapter discussions must include a PowerPoint. Evaluation methods will include how well you presented the information and did you cover key topics in the chapter. (100 pts each) Nation Presentations: (300 pts total) Selection of groups will be determined by the teacher: Criterion for Group Assignments- Groups must select one country other than the United States to discuss in class. Research must include the name and location of the country (choose a city, town or province), Discuss the culture, political structure, language spoken, religion(s) practiced, ethnicity of the people and the effect of globalization (if any). A ten to fifteen minute presentations is all that is required. A rubric will be given to each student with the categories that must be covered. Creativity is a big plus!!!(100 pts each) Geography Map Quiz: (100 points) Final Exam: (100 points) Class Participation (100 points)….work hard to earn it! Answering questions, posing questions, making comments based on observations are all considered a part of class participation. Homework Assignments: Each week the class will be given homework ( 530 pts total) Blackboard: Each week a question will appear on blackboard. You are required to post one primary post answering the question and then respond to one of your classmates post. Please use the text and outside sources to answer the question Points per posted range from 1-20 points= (320 points) Paper: You must use APA or MLA format when writing the paper. It must be at least 5 pages. Please submit you title no later than December 2012. You can select a topic from the textbook. (100 points) Attendance: (100 points) ATTENDANCE: Attendance Policy- Attendance is crucial to student doing well in the course. It is impossible to participate fully when one is absent. Whenever personal circumstances necessitate being absent, please contact me at one of my email addresses or call me at one of the number listed above. Although you are absent from a class, you are still responsible for the class work. A student that is absent four times or more will receive a one grade lower than what he or she earned. LATE ASSIGNMENTS AND MAKE-UP WORK: No Late Assignments. Course Withdrawal: The deadline to withdraw from a course shall not exceed 3/4 the duration of any class. Contact the Counseling Office at any TCC campus to initiate withdrawal from a course ('W' grade) or to change from Credit to Audit. Check the TCC Academic Calendar for deadlines. Students who stop participating in the course and fail to withdraw may receive a course grade of “F,” which may have financial aid consequences for the student. ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: Academic dishonesty (cheating) is defined as the deception of others about one’s own work or about the work of another. Academic dishonesty or misconduct is not condoned or tolerated at campuses within the Tulsa Community College system. Tulsa Community College adopts a policy delegating certain forms of authority for disciplinary action to the faculty. Such disciplinary actions delegated to the faculty include, but are not limited to, the dismissal of disrespectful or disorderly students from classes. In the case of academic dishonesty a faculty member may: Require the student to redo an assignment or test, or require the student to complete a substitute assignment or test; Record a "zero" for the assignment or test in question; Recommend to the student that the student withdraw from the class, or administratively withdraw the student from the class; Record a grade of "F" for the student at the end of the semester. Faculty may request that disciplinary action be taken against a student at the administrative level by submitting such a request to the Dean of Student Services.
