Course Description
Algebra integrates the traditional algebra curriculum with statistics, data analysis,
functions, discrete mathematics, geometry, probability, and trigonometry. Students work
with data-rich, real-world situations and applications in a curriculum that places algebra
in an applications-based context and where investigations precede the introduction of
formulas and expressions. From topics like fractals, iteration, and self-similarity to
technology-accessible techniques like the use of the graphing calculator to do statistical
analysis, students participate in cutting-edge mathematics as well as time-honored topics
and concepts. Upon successful completion of this course, students will have a completed a
comprehensive Algebra 1 program.

Classroom Expectations/Management Plan
The purpose of the Behavior Management Guidelines is to foster a safe, positive
environment for learning by teaching the practice of self-discipline, citizenship skills, and
social skills.

Classroom policy: no hoods to be worn during my class time.
Be present, be respectful, and be productive.
An incident results when a student’s behavior interferes with the learning process.
1. First incident:

80% Summative Work: Tests/Quizzes and Projects
 Re-assessments will be allowed for all tests. [Re-assessments will NOT be the same
test questions and will count as an additional quiz or test score]
 You will be required to fill out and complete a Re-Assessment Request Form prior
to re-assessing.
 Semester Finals cannot be re-assessed.
20% Formative Work: Assignments
 You will be graded on the quality and completion of the work.
 Specific problems on each assignment will be checked for accuracy.
 Any of the assignments can be re-assessed.
 You will be required to fill out a Re-Assessment Request Form prior to reassessing.
 Additional help is available after and before school if you are having difficulty
completing the problems assigned (Office hours are posted on my website and
outside my classroom door). Helpful online resources, such as tutorials will also be
provided via my website.
Late work policy: I do not accept late assignments, but students may re-assess any
assignment at any time. I encourage you to turn in work on time so that you get feedback
prior to any assessment. I will accept re-assessments up until a week before the end of
each marking period. Deadlines will be clearly posted in class and on my website.
Math support :I am available most days in the morning (6:45-7:20) and after school (2:103:00).
 Hours available will be posted outside the classroom door and on my website:
http://everettsd.schoolwires.net/ehs-ashaw

www.pearsonsuccessnet.com
 Contact other students for notes or borrow classroom note book.
 Make an appointment to get help from me.
Tardies: After the 2nd tardy, the student and I will have a conversation about it. If the
student is tardy more than 3 times per semester, it may result in detention.
Academic Honesty
At Everett High School we value honesty and integrity of work. Cheating on tests and
homework by copying other people's work is not acceptable. Making copies of someone's
computer disk is also considered cheating. When you cheat, you will receive a failing grade
for that learning activity. Cheating also includes the aiding and abetting of cheating by
others. Plagiarism, the act of borrowing another author’s work without crediting that
author and thereby implying that it is one’s own, is academically dishonest and a form of
cheating. Students found cheating or plagiarizing will be referred to school administration.
Contact Information:
 Email: AShaw@everettsd.org The fastest way to contact me is through email. I
check my email at least 3 times a day and can usually respond the same day at
school. I also use email to communicate about the class by emailing home
information about upcoming tests throughout the year.
 Phone: 425-385-4561 I check phone messages in the morning and end of the day
only. It may take me until the next day to get back to you. My prep time is 7:30 –
8:21 am.
 Class website: http://everettsd.schoolwires.net/ehs-ashaw My class website lists
assignments for each subject (you will look for Algebra 1), and is updated daily, so if
your child is absent or you would like to see what was assigned you can check after
4:00 p.m.
 Class Twitter: @MsShawsClass I will make important updates, share news, and
any assignment changes on the class twitter. It can also act as a discussion forum for
students who have questions on homework assignments or while studying for
quizzes or tests.
 Online grades: http://lmsinfo.everettsd.org I update grades every 2-3 days. If you
do not have access to the internet at home or work, your child can print you off a
progress report in class to bring home.


Digital Pathway:
During Algebra 1 you and your child will have access to a digital version of the
textbook and resources online, including video tutorials, diagnostic tests, practice
problems and assignments. If your child is absent one way they can learn missed
material is by accessing the appropriate sections in the online program.
Please have your student practice logging on at home or where they have
computer access using the information below.
If you have access to an IPad and would like an electronic version of the textbook on
the IPad go to the App store and download the app named Pearson e-Text for
Schools. When this is done please come and see me as it requires additional
registering that I must do on my end.
The previous pages of the syllabus should remain in your child’s notebook for future
reference. The next page is the only page to be returned to me.
