Manhasset Secondary Schools 7-12 Science and Technology Education Regents Earth Science – Course Overview – 2015-2016 Mr. Ainbinder (russell_ainbinder@manhassetschools.org) I. Course outline Earth Dimensions, Minerals & Rocks, The Dynamic Crust, Surface Process & Landscapes, Earth History, Meteorology & Atmospheric Energy, Water Cycle & Climate, Astronomy (longer topics may be split into subtopics as needed for timely review and testing). II. Classroom supplies necessary for success A. 1 ½ to 2-inch binder (for Earth Science ONLY) with Dividers B. 3 Pens and 3 pencils (preferably mechanical) C. 5 different colored highlighters D. Scientific Calculator III. Classroom rules A. Arrive on time. B. No eating or drinking in Science classrooms C. Students must be in their ASSIGNED seats with necessary materials out when class bell rings D. Laboratory work, homework, or project work found being copied by other students will be seized and appropriate action will be taken with a grade of zero given for the work of both students. IV. Grades A. The final grade will be the average of the four quarter grades and the Earth Science Regents Exam (Each grade will count as one fifth.) B. Quarter Grades Grade = Number of points earned by students divided by total number of possible points available within each category 55% test grades [All exams may be cumulative] 35% lab grades [quizzes and/or actual lab grade] 10% homework and class work D. Final exam –Regents examination - 20% of year’s grade F. Recommendations Students MUST have an A- average to be recommended for Honors Living Environment. V. Late assignments and laboratory reports, make-ups A. Work not completed due to absences must be made up. You will have one extra day for each day of absence. B. Lateness grade penalties – 10 % per day VI. Extra credit – There is NO extra credit available for this course VII. Extra Help – Mr. Ainbinder’s Extra Help will be available most mornings in room 127, from 7:30 –8:00am. VIII. Regents lab requirement – A. The lab requirement is a minimum of 1200 minutes so satisfactory laboratory exercises (or the equivalent). B. Regents exams are the final exams for courses. They count as one-fifth of Regents science courses’ final averages. Students who do not meet the lab requirement are not admitted to the Regents examination and receive a zero. The zero is averaged with the four quarters to calculate the course’s final average. C. Lab reports must be “satisfactory.” Lab completeness and accuracy are used to determine if a lab report is satisfactory. D. Dates First week in June – Earth Science Lab Practical On June 17, 2016 the written portion of Earth Science Regents is scheduled to be given. ONE WEEK BEFORE THE PEFORMANCE PART OF THE EARTH SCIENCE REGENTS – The last day to submit a lab report to be used to meet the lab requirement for June 2015 science Regents exams. E. Missing Lab reports 1. Arrangements to make up missed lab experiences must be made ASAP 2. Lab reports from previous quarters may be submitted for the lab requirement, not for a grade. F. Student lab folders must be retained and stored for six months after the completion of the Regents examination. IX. Academic Integrity – As written in the annual student planner, "To help students achieve their maximum academic potential, Manhasset Secondary School promotes an environment which fosters integrity and honorable conduct. Administrators, faculty, students and parents share the responsibility for maintaining an atmosphere in which personal accountability is valued." With this statement in mind, students must maintain work that is theirs alone and does not violate the academic integrity policy. Please refer to the handbook regarding the consequences and procedures used when an academic integrity violation has occurred.
