WEST SOUND UTILITY DISTRICT Job Description Job Title: Wastewater Treatment Facility – Maintenance Technician FLSA: Non-Exempt Reports to: Maintenance Supervisor General Function Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, this person shall perform and assist with minor to major maintenance and repairs of mechanical, electrical and structural systems. The Maintenance Technician shall also prepare and perform preventative maintenance at the South Kitsap water Reclamation Facility or within the District as required. Job Duties and Responsibilities The job description reflects general details as necessary to describe the principal functions of this employment position, the level of knowledge and skill typically required, and the scope of responsibility. Individuals may perform other duties as assigned, including working in other functional areas to cover absences or relief, to equalize peak work periods, or to otherwise balance the work load. Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 1. Perform maintenance on pumps, influent screening equipment, clarifiers, mixed liquor basins, anaerobic digesters, rotary blowers, air compressors, and all electro/mechanical devices associated with these systems. 2. Conduct preventative maintenance program for all plant equipment. 3. Troubleshoot report and repair failed equipment. 4. Maintain records of preventative maintenance and repairs. 5. Assist in maintaining tools and spare parts inventories. 6. Maintenance and repair of dewatering centrifuges and associated equipment. 7. Performs general housekeeping and clean up duties. 8. Attends training and continuing education sessions, as assigned. 9. Performs general landscaping duties and tasks as assigned. 10. Perform related duties as assigned. Training and Educational Requirements The employee is required to have a valid Washington State driver’s license at all times. The employee is required to maintain professional growth requirements and meet professional growth requirements as required under the Washington State Operator Certification Program. High School diploma or equivalent GED Valid First Aid card within six months of employment. Wastewater Treatment Certification Group 1 within 1 year of employment. Operational and Laboratory information management system knowledge. Must live within 30 minutes response time from the treatment plant if placed in an after-hours standby rotation. Must have a maintain telephone service for emergency call-outs. Ability to work holidays, weekends, and flexible hours to meet workload requirements. The employee is responsible for fulfilling the continuing education and/or refresher requirements for each required certification. Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities While requirements may be representative of minimum levels of knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform this job successfully, the incumbent will possess the abilities or aptitudes to perform each duty proficiently. 1. 2. Methods, tools, materials and equipment used in repair and maintenance in wastewater inside and outside treatment plant facility grounds. 2. Skills and ability to use hand tools, bench and power tools and equipment, rental equipment as required by position and task at hand. 3. Occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. 4. Ability to read and understand mechanical, electrical and structural drawings. 5. Ability to read and understand technical manuals. 6. Ability to discern fine detail for equipment repair. 7. Computers and related software applications. 8. Hazardous chemical handling and disposal requirements related to MSDS. Ability to: 1. Establish and maintain accurate records and logs 2. Prepare periodic reports related to quality control 3. Operate a computer terminal to enter data, maintain records and generate reports 4. Maintain current knowledge of advances in the field 5. Observe health and safety regulations The Maintenance Technician must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing and should possess good judgment and the ability to deal with the public in a professional and courteous manner. West Sound Utility District Job Description: Maintenance Technician Page 2 of 4 January 2015 Working Conditions Persons working in this position are required to work in all phases of the wastewater treatment system, and often are exposed to inclement weather. Due to various conditions, the agility to climb stairs, ladders, and walk on uneven surfaces is required. There are many health and safety hazards including, but not limited to the following: working with or near high voltage motors and generators; contact with various combustible and/or toxic gasses; and other hazards associated with working in and around sewage. The employee is subject to 24 hour on call availability. The work hours may be adjusted to meet requirements of the district. Environment 1. Driving a vehicle to conduct work. 2. Regular exposure to fumes, dust and odors. 3. Exposure to wastewater. Hazards Exposure to adverse biological agents, hazardous chemicals and related fumes. Physical Demands The Maintenance Technician must have overall stamina and ability to perform moderate to strenuous physical activity, including the ability to be sit or stand for long periods of times. The incumbent must be able to hear alarms and have the ability to audibly identify the presence of danger or hazard. The Maintenance Technician shall have two years of applicable experience. Other All employees must comply with the District’s Drug and Alcohol Program. All employees who operate District vehicles must have a driving record acceptable to the District’s insurance carrier.
