English Language and Composition Mr. Newby -- Email: tnewby@peekskillcsd.org Dear Student/ Parent: The following syllabus has been prepared so you will know exactly what is expected in AP English 11. This rigorous, engaging, and thought-provoking course prepares students for the AP examination in English Language and Composition, as well as the N.Y.S. English Regents. Many undergraduate schools reward college credit to students who exhibit proficiency on the AP exam; therefore, this course requires exceptional commitment as writers and readers in order to justify potentially receiving undergraduate credit. Course objectives, outlined below, are aligned with both national and state learning standards designed to facilitate mastery of the English Language. Also, on the back of this handout is a general overview of the different aspects of this course. I look forward to collaborating with your sons and daughters throughout the school year as we embark upon this challenge! Students will: understand the relationship between speaker, audience, and purpose read critically and become skilled readers of prose written in a variety of periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts identify and explain the author’s use of rhetorical strategies and techniques analyze and interpret literature through discussing literary elements and techniques. produce different types of compositions (synthesis, analytical, argumentative) use different rhetorical strategies and forms of organization in their own writing develop a complex main idea and sustain arguments through discussing readings, research, and personal experience as support develop social skills through working cooperatively with peers exhibit thoughtful analysis of material through presentations and public displays of work. demonstrate understanding of the conventions for citing sources demonstrate understanding and mastery of standard written English through carefully editing and proofreading 1. Tests/ Quizzes 20% Quarterly Exams test skills and prepare students to excel on the English Regents. Quizzes periodically evaluate understanding of core knowledge and comprehension of assigned readings during in-class, on-demand assessments. Practice AP and Regents essays will be completed both inside and outside of class. 2. Projects 20% Benchmark Writing Assignments and other major projects are done over an extended period of time and follow the writing process (prewriting, drafting, revising, feedback, editing, reflecting). 3. Class Work 20% Class Notes include responses to in-class assignments, discussions, presentations, and shared texts. Group Assignments require students to collaborate with peers and apply acquired knowledge. 4. Homework 30% Independent Reading (20%): There is always English homework. Students are required to read 1 independent novel a month. Reading journals are to be completed every week and will be checked every Friday. Upon completion of each novel a final project must also be done. A.P.H.W. assignments (10%): Extra reading will be assigned from The Language of Composition textbook, 5 Steps to a 5, and other texts. Assignments in response to these supplemental readings will generally be due every Monday. 5. Attendance/ Participation Attendance (5%) 0 unexcused absences + no lateness = 100% Each unexcused absences minus 5% Each lateness Participation(5%) = 100% Follow the class rules: 10% minus 3% Always be respectful towards your teachers and peers.
