BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE: Students will be familiar with WWI and its progression and ending with the armistice. They will also be familiar with the key players in WWI (eg: Allies and central powers). - KNOWLEDGE OUTCOMES: - - - - SKILLS OUTCOMES: - 1 Understanding how the Treaty of Versailles was formed – key players Learning the motives and aims of the Treaty Looking at the role of the League of nations – influence of Woodrow’s 14 points Gaining an understanding of the differing opinions and people involved in the Treaty of Versailles. Looking at the effects that the Treaty of Versailles had on Germany and the central powers socially and politically. What was Germany’s reaction to it? Were they involved? Analysing primary and secondary sources Building research and critical thinking skills Able to identify key historical dates and terms Analysing and identifying different historical perspectives and ideas Identifying links between events, people and places Mapping skills Caitlin Horan a1211217 A recount of what was covered in the previous lesson to establish knowledge, time, place and continuity. (End of WWI, Armistice). LESSON OVERVIEW (5 MIN) Introducing the Treaty of Versailles and key figures– what it entailed, who was involved, where and when it happened, League of Nations and 14 points. Use visual aid of PowerPoint. Students should be note taking. INTRODUCTION TO NEW TOPIC (10 MIN) Watch clip from BBC documentary ‘The Peacemakers’. Reiterates key dates, places and figures. Introduces the League of Nations and Woodrow’s 14 points. VIDEO CLIP (6 MIN) Discussion as a group of video clip – views of people involved, was there underlying tension? Was Germany invited? Was that fair? What do you think of a world government? What was their aim? GENERAL GROUP DISCUSSION (5 MIN) Discussion of the guilt clause and reparations Germany had to pay. The loss of land from Germany and other central powers. The strict rules imposed on them. How did Germany react and why? Use visual aide of PowerPoint. Students should be note taking. DIDACTIC (10 MIN) Each group is given the worksheet provided with three different sources to study and a set of questions to complete. Sources analysis contains a cartoon, a map of Germany before 1919 and after and finally an article from a newspaper after the signing of the Treaty. GROUP ACTIVITY – SOURCE ANALYSIS (20 MIN) Groups will then share with the class their views and answers. CLASS DISCUSSION (5 MIN) View short YouTube clip ‘Germany and the Treaty of Versailles’ (1:48 – 5:06). The presents the consequences of the Treaty of Versailles, the success and failures and if everyone was happy with the outcomes of the Treaty of Versailles. VIDEO CLIP (5 MIN) Each student is to write a short reflection on the Treaty of Versailles. Do you believe it was created fairly or not? Was the outcome reasonable or not? Did it have the effect it was created to? Students must back up their answers with historical evidence. INDIVIDUAL REFLECTION (15 MIN) DEBRIEF (9 MIN) Reflect what students have learnt and a time for any questions.
