Homework – Mat 102
September 16 – Quiz on trig ratios of sides of a triangle. Discussed: keystroking to find the measure of a trig function of
an angle and how to find the measure of the angle with a particular trig function value; adding and subtracting angles.
significant digits; and solving right triangles. Homework: Section 1.5 – 35, 38, 73, 89, Section 2.1 – 45, 47, 53, 65.
Section 2.2 – 8, 13, 17, 29, 45, 55, 61, 65, 71 and Section 2.3 – 9, 18, 25.
September 14 – Returned quiz. A student worked one homework problem on the board. Discussed: another definition
of the trig ratios; how to determine the value of the trig functions of 0, 30, 45, 60 and 90 degree angles; and
“cofunctions of complementary angles are equal”. Homework: Memorize – the definition of the trig ratios in terms of
sides adjacent, side opposite or hypotenuse(page 56), and the sin, cos and tan of the familiar angles (as well as the
reciprocal functions) (chart on page 60.) Problem set 1.5 – 67, 69, 79, 81 and 85. Problem set 2.1 – 7, 11, 15, 25, 27, 29,
31, 35, 39, and 41. Earliest date of first test could be September 23.
September 9 – Quiz. Discussed Pythagorean Identities and Ratio Identities. Several examples of the use of the
identities were worked during class. HOMEWORK; MEMORIZE the Reciprocal, Ratio and Pythagorean identities.
Section 1.3 – 64. Section 1.4 – 1-9, 15 – 36 multiples of 3 (15, 18, 21. . . 36), 47. Section 1.5 – 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 27, 30.
Earliest test date is two weeks from today (or later).
September 2 – Returned homework and cautioned students about errors. Discussed/defined the trig ratios in terms of
sides of a right triangle formed with a point on the terminal side of an angle in standard position. (p 27). Work several
examples including the trig functions of a 30 degree angle. Homework: MEMORIZE how to find any trig ratio of an
angle in standard position given a point on the terminal side of the angle. Memorize which ratios are reciprocals of each
other. Section 1.3 – 6, 12, 17, 19, 23, 24, 31 – 34, 43 – 49 odd, 51, 53, 57, and 61.
August 31 – Returned quizzes. Collected homework. Discussed: 30-60-90 right triangles; 45-45-90 right triangles;
graphing of lines and circles on a Cartesian coordinate system; coterminal angles; and standard position for angles.
Homework: MEMORIZE relationships between sides of 30-60-90 and 45-45-90 triangles. The distance formula and the
equation of a unit circle. Section 1.1 – 6,7, 38, 39, 43, 45, 49, 51, 53, 57, 59, 63, and 69. Section 1.2 – 2, 3, 9-12, 17-20,
31, 37, 42, 47, 69 – 74 all, 77, 91.
August 26 Quiz on the syllabus. Discussed the following terms/concepts: angle (initial and terminal sides) ;
rotation of an angle; classification of an angle (acute, obtuse, right, straight); classification of a triangle by sides (scalene,
isosceles, or right); supplementary angles; complementary angles; and the Pythagorean theorem. Homework: Section
1.1 – 1-5, 8, 9, 12, 15, 17, 21, 31, 33, 35, 37, 40, and 47.
