Trig Homework – Spring 2014
January 13 – Discussed vocabulary on pages 2 – 5, a review of high school information other than the definition of an
angle in standard position. Homework: Problem Set 1.1 – 1-5, 8, 9, 12, 15, 17, 21, 31, 33, 35, 37, 40. Be prepared to
sketch an angle in standard position with a certain measure.
January 15 – Answered homework question. Reviewed names of sets of numbers and symbolic names of a line
segment, a line, length of a segment and area formulas for a triangle and rectangle. Discussed special right triangles and
the distance formula. Homework: READ THE SYLLABUS, Read the text through page 22, and complete previous
homework if you did not already. Section 1.1 - # 6, 7, 43 –63 odd, 67, and 69. Section 1.2 – 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9-12, 17, 18,
31, 35, 38.
January 17 – “Tent” problem from homework was set up before class. Quiz. Discussion included how to graph a
parabola using the vertex form, and how to graph a circle in the center-radius form. Definitions of the six trigonometric
ratios of a right triangle with an angle in standard position were given. Homework: Know the definitions of the six trig
ratios of an angle in a right triangle with an angle in standard position as given on page 27 or in words. Problem Set 1-2
– 42, 45, 48, 49, 63 – 75 multiples of 3(complementary and supplementary angles are in the material you were to have
read for today.) Problem Set 1-3 - 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 .
January 22 – Returned quiz from last time. Gathered information about students on cards. Quiz on the definition of the
trig functions. Discussed points on the unit circle using the 30-60-90 and 45-45-90 triangles. Remember – two angles
are complementary if their angle measures total 90 and two angles are supplementary if their angle measures total 180.
Homework: Section 1.2 – 63 – 81 multiples of three. 97, 99, 100. Memorize the values of Sin 30°, Cos 30°, Tan 30°, Sin
0°, Sin 45°, Sin 60°, and Sin 90° that were on the board at the end of class today.
January 24 – Discussed trig ratios of familiar angles (0, 30,45, 60,90) and 180. 270, 360 degrees. Listed the Reciprocal
Identities. Homework: MEMORIZE the trig functions of the familiar angles. Be able to list the reciprocal identities from
memory. Section 1.2 - # 85 – 88; Section 1.3 – 1-4, 9, 24, 30, 43 – 53 odd, 55, 61, 68. (If you need practice work more
odd problems and check your answer.)
January 27 – Reviewed familiar angles. Derived the formulas for Pythagorean Identities and Ratio Identities. Discussed
keystroking the sin of an angle measured in degrees, minutes and seconds. Homework: Section 1.3 - # 66, 73, 74, 75;
Section 1.4 – KNOW the Ratio and Pythagorean Identities (be able to state them) Problem set 1.4 – 1-4, 15 17,19, 21, 23,
27, 29, 31, 33, 39, 41, 46, 51. BRING YOUR CALCULATOR TO CLASS.
January 29 – Worked problems in class using the identities that students were to have memorized by today.
Homework: Section 1.5 – 9-48 multiples of 3 [ when the directions give the hint to write in terms of š¬š¢š§ šœ½ š’‚š’š’… šœšØš¬ šœ½
then simplify – leave sine and cosine functions in the answer for the time being]. BRING YOUR CALCULATOR TO CLASS.
January 31 – collected homework due today (Jared, slide it under my door before class on Monday.) Discussed Section
2.1 information and reviewed algebraic part of trig in 1.4. Homework: Section 1.4 - 55 – 90 multiples of 5. Section 2.1 –
MEMORIZE the definition of the trig ratios on page 56, page 57 and know the theorem on page 58. Section 2.1 – 1-4, 7,
10 14, 17, 25 – 31 odd, 35, 40 45, 50, 55, 60. [If you can’t work a problem, skip it and go on – then come back to it later.]
February 3 – Discussed: changing from decimal degrees to degrees, minutes and seconds; adding and subtracting angle
measure; keystroking trig functions of different angles; keystroking to find an angle given the trig ratio value; and solving
a triangle for a missing part. Homework: Section 2.2 – 1-4, 8, 13, 17, 23, 29, 31, 37, 41, 45, 47, 55, 61, 65, 68, 72.
Section 2.3 -12, 17, 23, 29, 39. Test after Chapter 2 – so on February 12 or 14 (at the earliest)
February 5 – Discussed applications of right triangles to situations including angles of depression, elevation, and
direction. Homework: Section 2.4 – 1-4, 13, 15,17,21, 23, 29,31, and 35. I expect at least a sketch of the problem on
your paper and all you know about the triangle added to the diagram. Label the angle of interest . . .
February 7 – Worked two homework problems. Discussed basic vocabulary of vectors. Homework: Section 2.5 – 1-6, 9
– 19 odd, 25, 27, 35, 39. REVIEW any problems you feel necessary. TEST is Friday (February 14) on Chapters 1 and 2.
February 10 – Worked one homework problem. Discussed reference angles, coterminal angles and keystroking values.
Homework: Section 3.1 – 1-4, 5 – 80 multiples of 5 (at least) work more if you need to.
February 12 – Classes began at 10 – no class – ice.
February 14 – TEST – Homework from Section 3.1 should be ready for Monday!
February 17 – Discussed changing degrees to radian measure and vice versa. Discussed the relationship between arc

length, radius and measure of the central angle in radians. (šœ½ = š’“) Homework: Section 3.2 – 1-4, 5, 7, 11, 14, 15, 16,

February 19 – Quiz on homework. Worked a homework problem. Discussed the unit circle. Homework: READ Section
3.3 – Problem set – 1-6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 30, 32, 49, 71, 73, 75,
February 21 – Returned tests from 14th. Collected homework. Discussed s = ršœ½ and area of a sector. Homework:
Section 3.4 – 9, 12, 15 17, 31, 35, 37, 41, 45, 49, 55, 57. Next test will include Chapter 3 and what graphing is done in
Chapter 4.
February 23 – Returned graded homework. Quiz on homework due today. Discussed linear and angular velocity.
Homework: Section 3.5 – 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 25, 29, 31, 33, 39, 41, 45, 53, and 57. Make a chart with all familiar
angles < 2š… at the top and all six trig function down the left side – complete it with the familiar angle values that you
have memorized or that you take from the unit circle in section 3.3 page 137. There will be a test on March 7 on
Chapter 3 and as much of 4 as we complete by 3-7.
February 26 – Returned quiz. Worked one homework problem. Discussed graphing familiar angle values as a function
of sine, cosine, secant, and cosecant. Homework: Students should know the basic shape of the graphs of: y = sin x, y =
cos x, y = sec x and y = csc x. Know what the curves look like between 0 and 2š… (at least). Know that all four of these
functions repeat the pattern every šŸš… (ie: their period is 2š…). Know where secant and cosecant have asymptotes.
Know how to SKETCH all four curves without a calculator. Section 4.1 – 57 – 64. TEST is MARCH 7 on chapter 3
through 4.2.
February 28 – Quiz on sketching sinusoids. During class graphs of tangent and cotangent were discussed. Homework:
Be sure you can “sketch” the graph of all six trig functions.
March 3 – Returned a graded quiz. Discussed even and odd functions. Discussed amplitude and period of sinusoids.
Sketched several sin, cosine, sec or csc functions. Homework: Ex: 4.1 – 5 – 12. 37 – 45odd, 51 – 55 odd, 75, 76, 77, and
78. Section 4.2 – 1,3,4, 5, 6, 9, 11, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29, 33, 35 – 39 odd, 41, 43. (Do try all of the problems. Many only
require a quick answer. Only a few require a sketch.)
March 5 – Reviewed content for test on Friday. Come early if you want extra time. Any sketches on the test will be
completed without calculators.
March 7 – TEST on Chapter 3 through 4.2
March 10 – 14 is spring break!
March 17 – Returned test. Pointed out common careless errors. Discussed vertical translations (shifts) and mentioned
horizontal translations of sinusoid (sine and cosine) graphs. Homework – Section 4.3 – 5, 7, 13, 14, 17, 19, 71- 74 are
review problems, 76.
March 19 – Quiz with homework out. Discussed horizontal translations (slides) of sinusoids and their reciprocals.
Homework: Section 4.3 – 21, 23, 27, 31, 35, 37, 39, 41, 45, 47, 57, 59. Section 4.4 – 51, 53, 59, 61.
March 21 - Discussed sketching graphs of tangent today. Same form as for the sinusoids, except the tangent has
asymptotes, no amplitude and the period is pi. Homework: Section 4.4 – 5, 10, 17, 18, 25, 42, 43, 47, and 55. Section
4.5 – 9 , 13, 15, 17, 23, 25, 27, 29, and 33. (There is more than one correct answer. If you don’t get the answer in the
back of the book, ask me.)
March 24 – Reviewed graphs of y = tan x and mentioned y = cot x. Proved 4 identities during class. Homework: Section
4.4 - 6, 9, 19, 27, 41; Section 5.1 – 15, 19, 27, 31, and 37.
March 26 - Discussed inverse trig functions. Collected a homework problem to grade – students’ choice. How to
evaluate them, what their domain is, and what their range is. Homework: KNOW THE RANGE OF THE arcsin x, arccos x,
and arctan x. Section 4.7 – 1-12, then 17 – 47. . . as many of the odd problems as you need to work to be comfortable,
then 57, 60, 73,75, 78, 83 85, 87, 89. Section 5.1 – 33, 36, 58, 59.
March 28 – returned homework. Discussed the sum and difference identities. Homework: Memorize the identities
called the “Sum and Difference Formulas” from Section 5.2 Problems from 5.1 – 41, 43, 47, 49, 57, 65, (review problems
are good). Section 5.2 – 9-15 odd, 21, 23, 25, 29, 31, 43, 45, 51, and 55.
March 31 – Worked one homework problem in class, derived the double angle formulas, the used the new identities.
Homework: Memorize the double angle identities. Section 5.1 - 23, 25, 39, 51; Section 5.2 – 47, 53, 57 59, 63.
Section 5.3 – 9, 11, 15, 19, 30, 33, 36, 39, 42, 45, 48. (When you get stuck. . . leave the problem and go to the next one.
Keep on until you have most of them worked. . . or come get help!)
April 2 - worked a homework problem. Quiz on homework. Discussed half-angle formulas. Homework: MEMORIZE
half-angle formulas. Section 5.4 – 3-8, 11, 13, 15, 16, 17, 19, 21, 25, 29, 31, 39, 41, Select a couple of the problems 45 55 to prove. Your choice.
April 4 – Answered students’ questions about homework, or any topic that will be on the test on Wednesday.
Homework is to begin studying.. .I suggest the “Review Problems” at the end of the exercises in Chapter 5 – they review
Chapter 4. Monday I will begin Chapter 6.
April 7 – Discussed solving simple trigonometric equations. Homework for Friday is Section 6.1 – 5, 10, 12, 15, 19,
20,23, 25, 27, 31, 32.
April 9 - Test on Section 4.3 through chapter 5
April 11 – Justin Eaves taught. Homework: Section 6.1 – 29, 33, 35, 37, 45, and 49.
April 14 - One student worked a homework question. Quiz on homework. Discussion about solving equations that have
reciprocal functions in them, two functions or two different angles. Homework: Section 6.2 – 7, 13, 17,19, 21,23, and
27 (hint – square each side of the equation)
April 16 – Returned quizzes. Discussed solving equations that contain multiple angles. Discussed the Law of Sines.
Homework: Section 6.2 - 28 (don’t square), Section 6.3 – 5, 7, 11, 29, 31, 35, 39. and Section 7.1 – 5,7,13,17, 21.
April 18 – Returned tests, worked problems as students asked. Passed out the topics for final exam. Homework;
Section 6.3 – Review Problems: Section 7.1 - Work any problems 1- 23 that you need to practice, then problem 30 and
35.
April 21 – Easter holiday – Registration opens for summer term and fall semester for students other that those currently
enrolled.
April 23 – worked several examples of solving triangles using the Law of Sines and the Law of Cosines. Homework:
Complete the homework from 18th, Section 7.1 – 18 and 22; Section 7.2 – 11, 13, 15, 19, and 24.
