O’s Challenge
This is a challenge to be included in an honorary literary membership within Mr. Orebaugh’s class. You must
complete 20 challenges to be inducted. Your name will remain on my wall for years to come in recognition of
your accomplishment. Additionally, you will be eligible to receive an extra test grade.
1. List five stories by Edgar Allan Poe or Shakespeare and write a brief description of each
2. List five qualities of Romanticism along with five writers and five stories
3. Write a ½- plot summary and a ½-page critique on one of O’s Top 20 books (equivalent of 2 challenges)
4. Explain each component of the Plot Pyramid
5. Tell the causes, dates and five major battles of the Civil War
6. Write a one page allegory using at least three characters (equivalent of 2 challenges).
7. Pass the American Literature End of Course Test (exceed and earn 2 challenges) (JR only)
8. Score a 1200 or higher on the SAT and/or a 20 or higher on the ACT
9. Define the ancient rhetorical appeals along with at least five oratorical (speaking) strategies
10. Use context clues and/or literary techniques to prove an author’s purpose from a story of O’s selection
11. Write an original aphorism
12. Research your family’s name. Tell the origin of your surname and given name
13. Create an Edmodo account in Mr. O’s class and participate in online discussion regularly
14. Write a letter to the editor of a newspaper and have them respond back to you (email, paper)
15. Locate five historical markers in Polk County and write a brief summary of each one’s inscription (Take
selfie with each marker)
16. Participate in a community or school service project and get sponsor’s signature
17. Be a class officer for Mr. O
18. Write a page comparison of a book to a movie, including plot summary, characters and criticism
19. Create or draw something that complements a work of literature discussed in class
20. Participate in an oral presentation of a researched assignment
21. Write a 15-line poem that has at least one example of a metaphor/simile, alliteration/assonance,
hyperbole/personification and all 3 poetic devices are correctly identified (equivalent of 2 challenges)
22. Recite the CHS Alma Mater (equivalent of 2 challenges)
23. Find examples in magazines or online advertisements of the propaganda techniques testimonial, card
stacking, glittering generalities and transfer. Identify what product is being sold and explain what type
of propaganda technique is being used. (equivalent of 2 challenges)
24. Research the following colors and describe each’s symbolism: red, white, blue, green, black, pink and purple.
25. Identify and define four logical fallacies. Give an example of two of these.
26. Differentiate between inductive and deductive reasoning.
27. Write a thank you note to a teacher who has inspired or helped you this school year. Be specific in your
note and take selfie with teacher.
28. Create a satire on a topic of the teacher’s selection. Video must be two minutes in length and include
the problem, solution and at least two steps to solve the problem.
29. Identify 12 gods and goddesses of Greek mythology and their Roman and Egyptian counterparts.
30. Recite the prologue of Romeo and Juliet.
