What were the early strategies for the
north and south?
North/Union
• General Winfield Scott’s
Anaconda plan- Unions early
plan to blockade the saltwater
ports of the South and to stop
all commerce on the
Mississippi River so no cotton
could be exported and no war
supplies could be imported.
Weaken the south without
invading.
• Problem – took time and lots
of work
South/Confederate
• Defensive position( some said
their aim not to win but to avoid
losing)
• As war heated up, South
soon took the offensive to
try to weaken Northern
morale.
What was the result at Battle of Bull run?
• On July 21, 1861 Union forces commanded by
General Irvin McDowell clashed with
Confederate forces lead by General Pierre
Beauregard at The First Battle of Bull Run.
• Confederate troops fought and intimidated
Union forces with the rebel yell.
• Confederate took victory.
• Lincoln called for army volunteers.
