Course Descriptions:

Two-year program, four credits per semester, 11-12th grades. The Cosmetology curriculum follows the state outlined course of classroom and practical experiences required to achieve the state mandatory

1500 clock hours of training required before an individual can qualify to take the State Board of

Cosmetology Examination. Instruction includes training in giving shampoos, rinses, and scalp treatments; hair styling, setting, cutting, dyeing, tinting, bleaching, and fitting wigs; permanent waving; facials; manicuring; and, hand and arm massaging. Scientific knowledge related to bacteriology, anatomy, hygiene, and sanitation will be emphasized. Additional instruction in the areas of small business (salon) management, record keeping, and customer relations is also provided in this course

This course requires students to have excellent attendance as students are required to attend class 20 hours per week from 12:00 to 4:00 PM daily as required by the State Board of Cosmetology. Some evening sessions will also be required in order to obtain the required number of skill performances for the Student Progress Book. Upon completion of this two-year program, students are eligible to take the

State Board of Cosmetology examination, which will provide them with the required licensing to work as a Hair Stylist in Indiana.

College Credits and Certifications/EPAs:

COSM 100 (7 credits), COSM 150 (7 credits), COSM 200 (7 credits), and COSM 250 (9 credits)

Students who complete the required hours and procedures will take the State Board of

Cosmetology practical and written examinations to earn a State Cosmetology License.

First Semester Grade:

1 st 9-weeks grade (45%) + 2

Second Semester Grade: nd 9-weeks grade (45%) + 2 nd Semester Final Exam (10%)

3 rd 9-weeks grade (45%) + 4 th 9-weeks grade (45%) + 2 nd Semester Final Exam (10%)

Other Requirements Cosmetology School:

Student must provide their own transportation to and from the MACC each day as the

Cosmetology class time begins at 12:00 Noon which is different from all other MACC programs.

Students are required to attend class until 4:00 PM each class session. Students will not be dismissed prior to 4:00 PM for athletic practices, extra-curricular activities, work, or other reasons.

Student must maintain a minimum of 20 hours per week attendance in the program. It is the student’s responsibility to monitor his or her total hours in order to meet the targets listed below. Failure to meet the required attendance hours may result in removal from the program at the end of the first or second semester. o 188 hours by the end of 1 st 9-weeks o 376 hours by the end of 2 nd 9-weeks o 564 hours by the end of 3 rd 9-weeks o 750 hours by the end of 4 th 9-weeks

Student must have completed the required percentage of procedures as listed below during the first year of the Cosmetology program with a grand total of 606 procedures completed by the end of the school-year. (606 procedures out of 1,010 required to test) o 15% of the procedures by the end of the 1 st 9-weeks o 30% of the procedures by the end of the 2 nd 9-weeks o 45% of the procedures by the end of the 3 rd 9-weeks o 60% of the procedures by the end of the 4 th 9-weeks

Student must maintain a cumulative average of 75% or greater on the combined theory work (a numeric score) and a clinical/practical grade (pass/fail) as required per the State Board of

Cosmetology.

Student must demonstrate a professional work ethic through his or her attitude, speech, and behaviors. Discipline referrals may be grounds for removal from the program at the end of the first or second semester.

Student must follow the Cosmetology dress code requirements for both the uniform and shoe attire. The uniform requirements must be adhered to every class session. Failure to follow the uniform requirements may result in a discipline referral.

Job Shadowing

Career & Technical Education students are given the opportunity to explore career options and to be exposed to workplace experiences. All Cosmetology students are required to participate in, at least, one job shadowing experience each school year.

Internship

Second-semester seniors who have passed certification requirements may be placed in a limited internship experience during the last few weeks of school.
