DELTA SCIENCE GRADING POLICY 2011 - 2012
Welcome!
The following information will help to make your year run smoothly.
The Crossroads Science Curriculum consists of a two-year program that spirals through the major science areas of
Life, Physical and Earth Science. This year’s topics include: Genetics, Physics and Ecology. Next year's topics include:
Life Systems, Chemistry and Weather.
During this two year cycle, students will learn to:
1. Use the Scientific Method
2. Work cooperatively
3. Understand different problem solving approaches
4. Relate learning in math and apply it as a science tool
5. Develop organizational skills
6. Develop laboratory skills through use of equipment such as triple beam balances, microscopes, graduated
cylinders, etc…
7. Use and develop use of technology as an application of scientific principles

MATERIALS:
Composition notebook (not a spiral)
Two Pocket folders
Pencils / Erasers
Covered hand held pencil sharpener
Pen (blue or black ink)
Colored Pencils (8 colors is enough)
Scotch Tape
INTERACTIVE SCIENCE NOTEBOOK:
All students are expected to maintain an "Interactive Science Notebook" or “ISN” that will contain notes, vocabulary and lab
work. It is important for students to easily identify their own notebook and maintain its contents throughout the entire year.
Our opening assignment will include creating a cover collage, which should be completely covered in wide, clear packing
tape.
ASSESSING YOUR PROGRESS IN SCIENCE:
Students should expect a variety of assignments in science ranging from small one-night homework assignments to long
range lab or research based assignments.
Larger assignments could include tests, lab reports, research reports or long-term projects.
Moderate assignments could include quizzes, portions is a lab assignment (such as: just a conclusion or just a diagram),
smaller projects or pieces of writing.
Homework and class work are intended to assess understanding of concept taught as well as student effort and participation.
All of these various types of assignments will be clearly explained with clear due dates. Grades will be recorded in each
student's interactive notebook on a record sheet given at the start of each trimester.
LATE GRADES:
All assignments are due at the beginning of class.
Assignments / projects that are not completed and turned in on time will lose 10% per day that they are late. For example, if
an assignment is due Monday and would have earned a 97% A, but is not turned in until Wednesday, the grade will be
recorded as a 77% C+. After five school days, late assignments will not be accepted.
A single, nightly homework assignment is worth 2 points if completed on time. Incomplete homework will not be given
partial credit. However, if a homework assignment is reviewed, completed and turned in late, it is worth 1 point.
GRADING PROCEDURE:
The standard grades in Crossroads South Middle School are as follows:
98-100%A+
90-97% A
87-89% B+
80-86% B
77-79%
70-76%

All science grades will be calculated following the guidelines set forth by the science department:
Tests:
40%
Quizzes: 30%
Classwork: 15%
Homework: 15%
Each category grade will be calculated using the formula below and then added together to get the final marking period
grade.

ABSENCES: 

Students
are responsible for all missed notes and work.
If a student is absent, he/she should call another student in the same class to find out what happened in class and to get the
assignment. Students should try to do the assignment if they can. Students will have the number of days absent to make up
any work. For example, if a student is absent 3 days, he/she will have 3 days to make up any work. In the space below, list
two classmates and their phone numbers.

Upon returning to school, ALL STUDENTS THAT HAVE BEEN ABSENT MUST CHECK IN WITH MRS. EZZO at
the beginning of class, lunch, or Common Time.
EXTRA HELP:
Extra help is available before school, lunch time, Prime Time or Common Time. Please see me to make arrangements to
receive extra help.
In general, students do well in science class as long as they:
• Come to class prepared to work.
• Complete and turn in assignments ON TIME.
• Properly prepare for assignment, quizzes, and tests.
• Accept the responsibilities of their own actions in and out of the
classroom.
