Dual Credit
Purpose of dual credit
In Indiana, dual credit is the term given to courses in which high school students
have the opportunity to earn both high school and college credits. Dual credit
courses are taught by high school faculty or by adjunct college faculty or college
faculty either at the high school, at the college or university, or sometimes
through online courses or distance education. Dual credit is offered by both state
and independent (private, regionally accredited) colleges and universities.
Jasper High School offers both AP and dual credit courses.
Advanced Placement Courses (AP Courses)
Advanced Placement or AP courses are classes that have been approved by the
Collegeboard. College credit is obtained by earning passing score on the AP
examination the students take at the end of the course. The credit awarded
depends on the accepting university standards, but the common “passing” score
is a 3, and the test results are based on a scale of 1 – 5 with 5 being the highest
score possible. There are some exceptions, but offering credit for passing AP
exam scores is an almost universal practice. Credit transfer policies for many

Historically the Indiana Department of Education has paid for the exams in
subjects of Math and Science. The fee for all courses not under this umbrella is
the responsibility of the student and taking the exam is a requirement for earning
high school credit for the class. Currently, students that receive textbook
assistance do not have to pay for the exams.
The Collegeboard sets the exam calendar each year. AP Exams are administered in
the second and third weeks of May. Scores become available in July and are sent
electronically to the student. Scores may also be sent from the Collegeboard to
the university in which the student may be interested, very similar to the way SAT
scores can be sent. Students also have the option of indicating one university
they want to automatically receive their score on their answer sheet.
Dual Credit Courses
Dual Credit courses are courses taken at Jasper High School and meet the same
criteria and rigor of the college awarding the dual credit. Credits obtained in a
dual credit course at Jasper High School are transcripted at the college/university
awarding the credit. Once the credit has been earned, the student will request an
official transcript to be sent from the college/university that has awarded the
credit to the college/university the student will attend.
Acceptance of dual credit courses is always at the discretion of the
college/university that will be receiving the credit. We strongly encourage all
students to verify the college/university they plan to attend will accept the credits
before registering for them. This can be easily verified by calling the Office of
Admissions or searching the credit transfer link on the website of the school that
the credit is to be applied. It is important for students to keep track of the credits
they have registered for and received.
At this time, Jasper High School has dual credit agreements in place with three
college/universities;
Ivy Tech Community College
Oakland City University
Vincennes University
We are pleased to partner with each of these entities and have enjoyed a longstanding relationship that continues to grow each year. Because each of these
schools operate completely separate from each other, there are slight variations
to the registration processes. We inform students and parents of the registration
processes and deadlines well ahead of time. If there are ever questions or
concerns, please contact your guidance counselor or the teacher in the class
offering the dual credit.
After a student graduates from Jasper High School, it is the sole responsibility of
the student to contact the registrar’s office at the college/universities that they
received credit and have an official transcript sent to the school they will be
attending.
Ivy Tech Community College
Students register for dual credit with IVY Tech in the class they will be receiving
the credit. A representative from IVY Tech will distribute the registration forms
during class. The representative will assist the students in filling out the
registration forms and inform the students what the JHS class will count towards
at IVY Tech. There is no fee for dual credit classes taken through Ivy Tech.

Oakland City University
There are two registration periods for OCU dual credit. There is a school wide
registration week during the first week of September for first semester classes.
Second semester classes and full year classes will register during the third week of
January. Teachers will distribute the registration forms to students at the
beginning of the registration week(s) and assist the students in filling out the
forms. All students are required to complete a one-time Application for Admission
form. The registration form is required to be completed each semester.
After the forms have been filled out, they will be turned in to the dual credit
teacher they have latest in the school day. The teacher that receives the forms
will verify the classes, course numbers, credit hours, and check amounts. The cost
is $25.00 per credit hour. Twenty-First Century Scholars pay the full amount.
Students on textbook assistance do not pay for the credits. OCU has a minimum
requirement for their dual credit program. Before credit is awarded, students
must obtain a minimum score on one of the following tests:
SAT – 1250
ACT- 18
PSAT- 125
If a student registers for classes and does not obtain the minimum test score by
the end of their senior year, credit will not be awarded and the money will not be
refunded. Students are strongly encouraged to send their SAT/ACT score directly
to OCU from the testing agency. This will eliminate the need to submit a
transcript when registering for classes. Only grades of a “C” or better from Jasper
High School will transfer as dual credit. Deadlines to turn in all registration forms
will be strictly followed; no registration forms will be accepted by OCU or JHS
after the advertised deadlines.

Vincennes University
Students register for Vincennes University dual credit in the class they will be
receiving the credit. A representative from Vincennes University will distribute
the registration forms during class. The representative will assist the students in
filling out the registration forms and inform the students what the JHS classes will
count towards at Vincennes University. There is no fee for dual credits. There are
minimum SAT/ACT/Accuplacer scores for registration; these minimum scores vary
for different classes. Students will be made aware of the minimum requirements
at the time of registration.

*These courses are approved dual credit courses for the Academic Honors requirement.
For the Core 40 with Academic Honors diploma, students must:
Complete ONE of the following:
A. Earn 4 credits in 2 or more AP courses and take corresponding AP exams
B. Earn 6 verifiable transcripted college credits in dual credit courses from the
approved dual credit list.(See above list for approved dual credit courses)
C. Earn two of the following:
1. A minimum of 3 verifiable transcripted college credits from the approved
dual credit list,
2. 2 credits in AP courses and corresponding AP exams,
3. 2 credits in IB standard level courses and corresponding IB exams.
D. Earn a combined score of 1750 or higher on the SAT critical reading,
mathematics and writing sections and a minimum score of 530 on each
E. Earn an ACT composite score of 26 or higher and complete written section
