Language Arts Course Description The sixth grade English/Language Arts curriculum will follow the Common Core State Standards for Literacy. These standards are based on four areas of study: Reading (literature and informational text) Writing Speaking and Listening Language To be ready for college, workforce training, and life in a global society, students need the ability to gather, comprehend, evaluate, synthesize, and report on information and ideas, to conduct original research in order to answer questions or solve problems, and to analyze and create a high volume and extensive range of print and non-print texts in media forms old and new. Interactive Student Notebook, My Obsession! INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK To provide organizational skills in Language Arts, we use an interactive notebook in class. The notebook enables students to interact with teacher input and allow them to respond, create, interpret, and judge concepts learned in class. Students are responsible for keeping the notebook neat and organized for notebook checks. Notebook checks may be announced unannounced and are counted A GRADE. or First Quarter Objective Elements of a Short Story Plot Overview Author’s Purpose Story Elements Mood/Tone Point of View Central Idea/Supporting Details Making Inferences Summarizing Active Reading Strategies Novel Study – The Cay Grammar – Parts of Speech and Sentence Types Vocabulary Roots, Prefix and Suffix origins Expository Writing 2nd Quarter Objectives 3rd Quarter Objectives Informational Text Persuasive Techniques Text Structure Bias Cause/Effect Fact/Opinion Compare/Contrast Folklore Study Dialogue/Dialect Symbolism Character Analysis Novel – The Call of the Wild Novel- The Call of the Wild Parallel Structure Novel-based Vocabulary Novel-based Vocabulary Grammar – Basic Sentence Structure/Pronoun Focus Grammar – Pronoun Focus Poetry Figurative Language Symbolism Performance Techniques in Drama Stacey.noel@cms.k12.nc.us http://staceynoel.cmswiki.wikispaces.net/ http://qhmsla6.cmswiki.wikispaces.net/ 980-343-2620 Education is not the filling of a bucket, but the lighting of a fire. -- W.
