Lebanon Memorial United Methodist Church 24 Tate Street Lebanon, VA 24266 Our Mission: “to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.” (276) 889-2721 Wil Cantrell, Pastor _________ May 2015 An Audience of One Who are you living your life for? I often hear people say “I don’t care what anyone thinks of me.” Well forgive me. But I do. I care greatly what others think of me. I care whether someone experiences me as sincere, caring, and wise or conniving, selfish, and foolish. Most of all, I care about if I really am sincere, caring, and wise – not just if I come across that way. Not caring what others think does not make us holy or strong, it makes us psychotic and narcissistic. However, caring about what others think for the sake of caring for others is very different from making every decision in life to please others. If you try to please everyone for long enough, you most likely will eventually become psychotic. It’s just a losing battle. So, how are we supposed to make the best decision day in and day out? I believe in every decision I make I have to decide who I am trying to please with my decision. There is one nonnegotiable factor in each decision. First, I must please God. If I do not ultimately live my life for an audience of One then my life loses the power to be a positive influence on every other person I encounter. Once I have discerned options that I believe to be pleasing to God, then I ask who else in my life should take priority. Is it my family? Is it a co-worker? A church member? A person or group with a special interest and stake in this decision? Is this one of those times when I need to take care of myself in order to be able to continue taking care of others? Some of the most meaningful decisions I have ever made occurred in those instances when I had a choice to live for an audience of One rather than for other interests including my own. This is why the gift Rebecca and I will make to our Heart of the Matter capital campaign has recently taken on special meaning to us. As we learned that we would be reappointed to serve at Concord UMC in Knoxville next year, we had to decide whether to keep our full commitment to the campaign even though we would now have 3 months rather than 3 years to pay it off. As we talked together, we decided that we believe God had led us to make our commitment and so we should keep the commitment in full as a sign of our trust that God will fully provide for us. Since we will not be at the church to benefit directly from the campaign this gift affords us the opportunity to give to God simply to say “Thank you!” and “We love you!” Many of our church leaders have already been turning in pledges as well. On Sunday, May 10, we will gather for our Celebration Sunday at Lebanon High School. There will be a special brunch at 9:30am and worship in the Little Theater at 11am. You will get to be inspired by learning how much has already been pledged and how you can be a part of helping us reach a goal that will help our church reach our community with the Gospel for years to come. Next month, there will be plenty of time for us to say goodbye. This month, “Let’s keep up the good work!” Keep on reaching out! Keep on inviting your friends and acquaintances to church! Keep on giving! Keep on serving! Keep on living for an audience of One!
