REFLECTIONS FROM THE PASTOR
I’m not sure, on May 18th, if one can actually enjoy watching the snow pile up, but it is interesting. It’s not
all that unusual to have snow on May 18th, but it’s not all that common, either. It did, however, prompt me to
run out to the garden, pull some rhubarb, shake off the snow, and make a rhubarb cherry crunch. If I was
going to have to watch the snow fall and listen to the wind-driven snow pelt the living room window, then at
least the house would smell great! Instead of “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade”, this was “when
it snows this late in May, make rhubarb crunch.”
We live in North Dakota…with all its crazy weather. Nine months of winter and three months of poor
sledding. So, it snows on May 18th. We take a few pictures, post them on facebook, make a rhubarb crunch,
and life goes on.
We know that tomorrow the sun will come out…or the next day…or the next and eventually spring and
summer will arrive…and not too long after that…more snow.
We followers of Christ know that there are joys and struggles in life, snow and sunshine. We fall down. We
get up. Jesus never said that life would be easy. In fact, he speaks a lot about being a servant, carrying our
cross, making sacrifices in life. None of this magical “if you believe in Jesus enough you will have a new
Mercedes, a new pickup, or a new tractor” kind of stuff. Nope. Jesus talks to us and walks with us in real life –
with all its ups and downs.
So, it snows on May 18th. We take a few pictures, post them on facebook, make a rhubarb crunch, and life
goes on.

person’s checking or savings account into Sunne’s
Sunne Lutheran Church had its beginning
with the Swedish settlers in this area. The summer
holiday that the Swedes celebrated was the summer
solstice, Midsummer, on the 24th of June. No
matter what day of the week it fell on, the church
had a holiday. They had a potluck dinner, a
worship service, the youth made and sold ice cream,
the ladies of the church had an auction of things
they had made. It was truly a community affair.
The celebration was usually held in a farm yard or
picnic area.
This year, the Midsummer Picnic will be Sunday
the 28th at the South Park (football field area) in
Wilton. The Sunne WELCA sponsors the
Midsummer picnic. Everyone is welcome to come
at 10 a.m. for the worship service and to bring
something for the potluck dinner. An auction will
be held as part of the festivities. If you have items
you would like to donate, please contact Carlene
Dockter at 734-6663. Proceeds will be used to
support Sunne’s Women of the ELCA.
