Objective(s): SWBAT
*Know the oxidation numbers
for common metals with more
than one ionic charge.
*Write the formula (or name) for
a given compound using the
stock system.
Objective(s): SWBAT
*Given the name (or formula) of
any binary or tertiary acid, write
the formula (or name) of the
acid.
Objective(s): SWBAT
* Use the skills learned over the
course of this unit and apply
that knowledge to a variety of
problems.
Objective(s): SWBAT
* Articulate difficult concepts
covered in this unit to their
peers.
* Answer test-like questions
and assess how to best prepare
for the exam
Objective(s): SWBAT
*Given the name (or formula)
of any binary or tertiary acid,
write the formula (or name) of
the acid.
Engage
Students will be taken through a
brief history of chemistry and
how naming of chemicals has
changed since alchemical times.
This change has lead to a unified
system of naming established by
IUPAC to allow chemists to
communicate effectively.
Engage
Importance of acids discussion.
Students will be introduced to
how acids behave chemically
and the ways in which chemists
use acids.
Lab
Group Practice
Students will work in small
groups to concisely explain to
one another concepts of interest
in this unit. The answering of
test like questions will give
students an idea of what
material they need to
individually study to prepare
for the exam.
Engage
Students will begin the class by
reviewing rules for naming
acids prior to the quiz.
Explain
Students will be taught how
compounds containing metal
ions with multiple charges are
named. Students will also see
how these names and formulas
are written to properly identify
the oxidation state of the metal
involved.
Explain
Students will be introduced to
how acids are named.
Evaluate and Summary
*Homework 8A
Evaluate and Summary
*Quiz 8-1: Covalent and
Univalent Ionic
*Homework 8C

Students will explore different
types of naming in an extensive
dry lab.
