Nutrition Unit Assessment
Using the information that you have learned in class and research that you will conduct, complete the
assignment below. Please write your answers in complete sentences and use proper labels where
appropriate. All work must be shown (including calculations and references).
1. Using the formula (BMI = weight in pounds * 703/ height in inches squared) determine your
Body Mass Index.
2. Calculate your daily caloric intake using food labels, nutrition facts, including condiments, etc.
Take into account how your foods are prepared and/or where you are eating. List your foods
and their respective calories.
3. Using the information gathered in number 2, explain in detail how your daily caloric intake
compares to the Daily Reference Values (grams of Carbohydrates, Fats and Protein).
4. Determine your own daily caloric expenditure (exercise, activities of daily living, etc.). You will
also need to calculate your BMR (basal metabolic rate) to determine your correct daily caloric
output. Add your BMR (how many calories you need to live, sleep all day) to your expenditure.
5. Determine what your optimal daily intake/output (caloric intake and energy expenditure) is for
your BMI.
6. Use the information that you have gathered above to create a daily diet plan/menu for a
week?). Make sure you incorporate all of the food groups in each meal.
What can you do to ensure that you have a “healthy” BMI? What are some strengths and weaknesses in
using BMI? What steps can you include to ensure your meals have the proper nutritional values?
