EVIDENCE OF GLACIERS Glacial Landform: U-Shaped Valley - A Ushaped valley or glacial trough is formed by the process of glaciation. It has a characteristic U shape, with steep, straight sides and a flat bottom. Cirque – a steep walled, bowl-shaped mountain basin formed by a glacier. Arete - An arête is a thin, crest of rock left after two adjacent glaciers have worn a steep ridge into the rock Horn - A horn results when glaciers erode three or more arêtes, usually forming a sharp-edged peak Drawing/Diagram: Name: _________________________ Esker - a long, narrow, winding ridge composed of layered sand and gravel deposited by a glacial meltwater stream. Drumlin - Drumlins are long, teardrop-shaped hills of rock, sand, and gravel that formed under moving glacier ice. They can be up to 2 kilometers long. Erratic - Glacial erratics are stones and rocks that were transported by a glacier, and then left behind after the glacier melted. Morraine - Moraines are accumulations of dirt and rocks that have fallen onto the glacier surface or have been pushed along by the glacier as it moves. A receding glacier can leave behind moraines that are visible long after the glacier retreats.
