WAGSTAFF, INC. JOB DESCRIPTION
CNC Machinist
Job Function
Follow prints and specifications to set up, edit and program CNC and/or manual machines,
such as mills and lathes, to very close tolerances and to operate these machines for precision
work using best and safe practices. Employee is expected to have achieved a level of
technical proficiency equivalent to a subject-matter expert, and is capable of training less
senior employees.
Primary Job Responsibilities
 Set-up and operate CNC and/or manual production machines; primarily CNC Milling
Machines
 Set up and use, modify if necessary, required fixtures, cutting tools and work instructions
to machine parts to specification
 Calculate the appropriate feeds and speeds for cutting operations required to
manufacture parts to prints
 Perform all CNC machining processes including editing G&M codes and offsets (CNC
only)
 Generate CNC Programs through Interactive programming methods
 Troubleshoot to identify problems with machine parts and product and assist other less
skilled employees to resolve problems
 Develop machining process instructions, tool sheets, and/or CNC machining programs as
necessary and applicable to the specific machine
 Create and edit tool sheets and perform tool replacement edits
 Issue purchase requests for tool requirements
 Evaluate tool wear and establish tool change frequency
 Follow documented processes
 Maintain a high degree of quality
 Understand and follow all workplace safety rules such as safe work practices and
standard operating procedures
 Cross train and mentor co-workers to share skills and knowledge
 Maintain required and accurate paperwork
 Housekeeping/maintenance of work area and machinery
 Punctual and regular attendance
 Implement company vision statement, mission statement, and corporate and
departmental goals and objectives
 Abide by company policies
 Maintain confidentiality
 Understand and follow all workplace safety rules, such as safe work practices and
standard operating procedures
 In order to meet business objectives, work weeks in excess of 40 hours may be required
Education, Certifications, Licenses
 Minimum of ten (10) years CNC or manual machining experience required
 May substitute one year experience for accredited trade or vocational machining
certificate
 Associate of Arts degree in Machining Technology preferred
Experience/Proficiencies Required
 Experience in the set-up and operation of CNC Milling Machines
 Demonstrated ability, understanding, and experience to guide raw materials through all
available processes, and end with a finished product that conforms to all specified
requirements
 Understand the machining properties of multiple types of materials such as steel, cast
iron, aluminum, brass, stainless steel and composites
 Familiarity with operation and maintenance of machines and tooling
 Ability to machine parts to precise specifications
 Minimum of 2 years of experience with FANUC Controls
 Ability to use the capability of the CNC control to develop CNC machining programs
(CNC only)
 Ability to interpret mechanical drawings for proper applications of tolerances, fit, and
process control
 Proper use of precision measuring instruments including calipers, machinist protractors,
radius/thread gauges and micrometers
 4+ - axis experience required where work center has these features
 Knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing)
 Demonstrated ability to train and mentor other employees
 Experience utilizing MRP systems for accurate job reporting and assignment of jobs
Experience/Proficiencies Preferred
 Lean Manufacturing knowledge
 Experience working with ISO quality systems
 Heavy crane and rigging experience on large capacity machines
Administrative Responsibilities/Requirements
 Employee may be required to present to small groups to conduct training, lead process
improvement initiatives, and provide job status updates
 Employee will be trained and be expected to successfully utilize Wagstaff Employee
Self-Service, Timekeeping, MRP and other required programs
Language and People Skills
 Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and
maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
 Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
 Ability to write quality tags and make detailed notes in communication logs
 Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
Mathematical Skills
 Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area,
circumference, and volume.
 Ability to add and subtract positive and negative numbers
 Ability to apply concepts of advanced algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability
 Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in
situations where only limited standardization exists.
 Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or
schedule form.
