Nutrition Through the Lifespan January 9, 2013 Standard: Students will apply the dietary guidelines throughout the lifespan as they relate to modern life. EQ: What is lifespan? Bellringer: Why do you think the nutritional requirements are different for each phase of life? Life Span The time span from before birth through adulthood. Lifespan Stages: Pregnancy Infancy Childhood Adolescence Adulthood Prenatal Period The period between conception and birth. There are 3 trimesters during pregnancy. Fetus The unborn baby Weight Gain during Pregnancy Women should expect to gain about 25-35 pounds during pregnancy. Women carrying twins may be advised to gain at least 45 lbs. Miscarriage The spontaneous expulsion of the unborn child. Causes (sometimes): Contaminants in foods High levels of Mercury in bloodstream Bad Diet While Pregnant Premature birth Low birth weight Feeble, weak Inability to breast feed Deformed babies complications at birth Depression Babies have fewer brain cells Food Items Pregnant Women should stay away from Caffeine Seafood Alcohol Tobacco Major Nutrients for Pregnant Women Folate: lack of folate can cause birth defects in the spine Iron: is needed to increase blood volume Calcium: build baby’s bones Spina bifida Breast Milk vs. Formula Breast milk provides a balance of nutrients and antibodies to fight infections Formula: more expensive; can cause allergies Assignment- Maternal Nutrition Create a 2200 Calorie diet using www.choosemyplate.gov for 5 days (breakfast, lunch & dinner). Seafood is not allowed in her diet. Caffeine should be used moderately. Day 1 lab participants: Preheat your oven to 375. Please wash your hands and follow lab safety procedures! Turn it in when you are finished! (Due today!). Once you’re finished with menu, complete chapter 4 questions on page 101102 1-15. Do not write the questions! Assignment You are to plan a breakfast and lunch menu for toddlers for 5 days. Try to have a variety and not use the same food twice for the days allowed. Attach them together and turn in. Example Oatmeal Apple wedges Bacon Milk Mid-morning snack: Diced Peaches Consider your MyPyramid when planning your menu. Think a food from each food group: Grains, Vegetables, Fruits, Dairy, and Meat/Protein Childhood Nutrition Encouraging Good Eating Habits Serve foods that are colorful and texture Make shopping trips fun Don’t urge children to clean their plate. Adolescence Adolescence The period of biological, cognitive, and psychosocial transition from childhood to adulthood, that usually lasts a decade.
