"Staying Competitive as
the A&D Environment Changes"
Guest Speaker: Daryl Pelc
Vice-President, Engineering & Technology
Phantom Works
Boeing Defense, Space & Security
Daryl will discuss the impact of a number of factors on
the rapidly changing competitive environment faced by
A&D primes and their suppliers. Particular emphasis
will be on the impact of:
OC Chapter Sponsors
 Changes in Federal and DOD budgets
 Changes in demographics, e.g., multiple
generations in the workplace, the retirement of Baby
Boomers and the loss of decades of institutional
knowledge and experience, the scarcity of engineers.
 Changes in product mix
 Past, present, and anticipated mergers and
acquisitions, at various levels in the A&D supply chain
As a result of these changes, many A&D suppliers will
now need to reposition themselves. Daryl will suggest
ways this might be accomplished, including identifying
core competencies and seeing how those
competencies can be applied to new markets.
The impact of these changes on Boeing and how the
company has successfully addressed them to
maintain a competitive position will be used as an
example.

Communication Tip: They'll Only Remember
Two Things
by
Ivan Rosenberg, President & CEO, Frontier Associates, Inc.
When people are preparing an important communication, to
the workforce, the Board, to peers, or the public, they often
start by writing the speech.
Stop for a moment. Have you seen a movie or TV show
recently? What did you think of it? (Don't read on until you
have answered.)
Typically you had only two thoughts. They might be
something like, "It was very exciting and well-done." Even
though the show lasted 30-90 minutes or more, and with
thousands or millions of dollars of effects and editing, you
were left with only two thoughts. All other comments you
might have are likely only expansions of these two
thoughts.
The same is true for your presentations and
speeches. When you stop talking, your listeners are going
to have only two thoughts. Thus, the first step in developing
a communication is to answer the critical question, "What
two thoughts do you want them to have at the end?".
For example, I was working with a CEO on his annual
address to the workforce. When I asked his purpose, he
said "To let people know what is going on in the company."
I responded, "Send an e-mail and save a lot of time. Not
only will people not remember a lot of data, but what they
think they do recall is likely to be inaccurate."
We first developed the two thoughts that would require
communication from the organization's leader and that
would produce sufficient value to be worth gathering the
entire workforce. The two thoughts we created were:
1. The future of the company is exciting
2. I'm one of the lucky ones to be here.
The entire speech was designed around producing these
thoughts. If something was not relevant to this intention, it
was not included. As measured by the subsequent Q&A
session, the speech was an outstanding success.
