JOB DESCRIPTIONS
PHOTO & GRAPHICS EDITOR
Reports to:
Editor in Chief
Contract Terms:
This is a one year, part-time contract position (average 30 - 34 hrs/week) that
commences two weeks before the first issue in May and ends after the last issue
the following April. There is a mandatory lay-off period between semesters.
Remuneration is for work during weeks of publication only. Note: Hours may vary
from week to week

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Photo and Graphics Editor coordinates volunteer photographers and illustrators to obtain images for
the paper. This editor provides guidance to volunteers regarding image composition and content,
distributes supplies, generates and scans photos and images for use in the paper and website. The photo
and graphics editor receives input from editorial staff regarding need for images.
Specific Responsibilities:
1.
Work with the Editor in Chief on creating a vision for the paper in terms of overall "look," logo,
body and headline fonts, masthead, cohesion, consistency, etc. Assist Layout Director to
implement said vision.
2.
The Photography and Graphics Editor is a design position. The editor is responsible for all work
related to photography and graphics for the Ontarion from conception, to finished print-ready
integration, to digital image processing. Images will be produced by volunteers and through
personal work.
3.
Using art and design principles operate digital photographic equipment and develop and upload
photos to photo and graphic computer. Select images to be used in the paper. Maintain an
organized computer file of images.
4.
As required, develop concept, graphics layout and design for cover and centre spread in
consultation with the Editor in Chief and communicate direction to the Layout Director.
5.
If required, coordinate a comics page for the paper in consultation with the Editor in Chief and the
Layout Director.
6.
Uploads photos and graphics and/or video to website, to supplement the printed newspaper;
develops additional photo, graphic and/or multi-media content for website.
7.
Maintain and be responsible for an inventory of cameras, lenses, batteries and replenish them
when necessary. Consult with Business Manager on purchases.
8.
Use graphic software, desktop publishing software, and Macintosh computer equipment and
image processing to manipulate images where necessary.
9.
Provide workshops and/or skills sharing for volunteers as outlined in 4.22 of the Operating Policy
Manual (Training Guidelines).
10.
Build and maintain a diverse volunteer base including increased representation of people of
colour, first nations people, women, lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgender people, people
with disabilities, working class people and people within different age groups.
11.
Must attend mandatory editorial meetings and staff meetings.

Must attend mandatory training sessions provided by the Editor in Chief and the Board of
Directors.
13.
Must complete annual self evaluation.
14.
Must attend crossover training provided by predecessor upon hiring and must provide crossover
training to incoming replacement at the end of the contract, as outlined in 4.22 of the Operating
Policy Manual (Training Guidelines).

GENERAL STATEMENTS

Mandatory Office Hours
Due to the nature of the production schedules, hours of work for staff are somewhat flexible.
However, all employees are expected to adhere to some preset office hours in order to be
available to other staff, volunteers, customers, vendors and the public at large. These mandatory
hours will be set in conjunction with the employee’s direct supervisor.

Code of Conduct
It is the responsibility of the employee to familiarize themselves with the Constitution and the
Operating Policy Manual of the Ontarion Inc and conduct themselves accordingly.
17.
Confidentiality and Non-Competition
Any and all information which an Employee obtains in the course of their employment shall be
received and held in trust for the Ontarion Inc. Employees shall keep confidential all information
relating to the business product, design, pricing and sales policies, customer lists, advertiser lists
and trade secrets of the Ontarion Inc.
Upon leaving the employ of the Ontarion Inc., employees will immediately deliver to their
immediate supervisor all keys, data, manuals, notes, records, plans or other documents in their
possession or control, either written or computer files and passwords, concerning such business,
product design, pricing and sales policies, customer lists, advertiser lists and trade secrets. The
employee will continue to keep confidential all such information and will not undertake to use said
information in any way that could be harmful to the Ontarion Inc.
RECOMMENDED HIRING CRITERIA

Must have basic experience with Adobe Photoshop

Must have strong graphic and design skills

Background in photography with a range of experience. Ability to work in a variety situations and
conditions in terms of lighting, space, action, etc
