Philippine Theatre (UK) Can you help us? Dear Sir/Madam Philippine Theatre (UK) is a voluntary community amateur theatre group open to all believers in theatre from any background, race, colour or creed. Our members are 90% Filipino’s, with representatives from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. So, we have representatives from throughout the whole of the archipelago from North to South, East to West! Our current and recent members come from all over the world: China, India, Africa, America, Ukraine, Trinidad, Germany, Italy, England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales! Our performers have ranged from 5 to 75 years old! We have recently discovered that PTUK is the only active Filipino Theatre group in the whole of Europe! A fact of which we are very proud, and we have just celebrated our 10th birthday here in London. The key to our continued success lies in our own resident Playwright/Artistic Director, Ramon Castillanes Teñoso. To date, Ramon has written 13 plays – a truly remarkable achievement. Also to date, every single one of his plays has been staged (certainly not every Playwright can say that!) His latest play From Heaven with Love is a comedy musical and will be performed at Chelsea Theatre from 22nd to 26th Jan 2014. Book now! There has been a great deal of media interest in the group throughout its existence. Newspapers, TV, radio and Internet broadcast and we are currently involved in a project to make a full-length movie based on the score of Ramon’s last play, Migrants. This project is in its infancy, but we are planning to start filming early next year. Also, we have granted ‘open access’ to a University of Warwick student, Sherwin Mapanoo. Sherwin is writing a dissertation on PTUK for his Master of Arts degree in International Performance Research. So, how has all this been possible? Well it is down to the generosity of people like you who can see a need for supporting and preserving the Arts. And what a unique group this one really is. However, here comes the ugly bit, we rely on financial support to move from one project to the next. We have our own fund-raising activities, which include charitable dinners and contributions from members and friends, but each production costs in the order of £5000. Our members are not paid – they do it for the love of it and the immense camaraderie that is generated. They put in many hours of work behind the scenes to make Ramon’s vision a reality. We are therefore desperately searching for principal sponsors and/or donators. The money will go to our production costs – costumes, props, staging, lighting, printing, etc 10% of all ticket sales will be donated to the Philippine Red Cross to help the victims of Typhoon Haiyan. Thank you for reading this far! I really appreciate it. Kind regards Maurice Newbery Managing Director Philippine Theatre (UK) 07976 616 604 maurice.newbery@sky.com
