Language Analysis
Collocations
Collocations are partly or fully fixed expressions that become established through repeated contextdependent use. Such terms as crystal clear, middle management, nuclear family, and cosmetic surgery
are examples of collocated pairs of words.
There are several different types of collocation. Collocations can be adjective + adverb, noun + noun,
verb + noun and so on. Below you can see seven main types of collocation in sample sentences.
1. adverb + adjective
Invading that country was an utterly stupid thing to do.
We entered a richly decorated room.
Are you fully aware of the implications of your action?
2. adjective + noun
The doctor ordered him to take regular exercise.
The Titanic sank on its maiden voyage.
He was writhing on the ground in excruciating pain.
3. noun + noun
Let's give Mr Jones a round of applause.
The ceasefire agreement came into effect at 11am.
I'd like to buy two bars of soap please.
4. noun + verb
The lion started to roar when it heard the dog barking.
Snow was falling as our plane took off.
The bomb went off when he started the car engine.
5. verb + noun
The prisoner was hanged for committing murder.
I always try to do my homework in the morning, after making my bed.

He has been asked to give a presentation about his work.
6. verb + expression with preposition
We had to return home because we had run out of money.
At first her eyes filled with horror, and then she burst into tears.
Their behaviour was enough to drive anybody to crime.
7. verb + adverb
She placed her keys gently on the table and sat down.
Mary whispered softly in John's ear.
I vaguely remember that it was growing dark when we left.

Procedure
Lead-in
Key:
Heading 1: ride a horse/play football/go cycling
Heading 2: join a club/paint a picture/take photos
Heading 3: see a show/watch a film/go
fishing/play an instrument
Students drag and drop the photos into the
correct places. Ask the students: What kind of
place is Fun Land? Ask some additional
questions, e.g. Have you ever been to such a
place? Did you enjoy it? Which activity did you
like best and why? What kind of activity would
you like to try in Fun Land?

Main input
Voiceover:
1. Are you bored at home? Do you have nothing
to do? Then come to Fun Land!
2. Fun Land is an activity resort for the whole
family, where you can enjoy all of your favourite
hobbies, all under one roof!
3. At Fun Land we have almost every sport and
leisure activity you can think of! Sports fans can
play football with top professionals, hire one of
our top-of-the-range bikes and go cycling, or ride
a horse in our beautiful woodland park.
4. But Fun Land isn’t just for sport, we’ve got
something to suit everyone! Artistic types can
take advantage of our arts centre to paint a
picture, and have it shown in the gallery! Like to
salsa? Join a dance club and practise in our
studios! Or if you prefer to work alone, take
photos in our photography class with one of our
expert instructors!
5. At the end of the day, when you want
something more relaxing, how about seeing a
show in the Fun Land theatre, watching a film in
our very own cinema, taking some time out and
going fishing in the lake, or playing an
instrument?
Students listen to the audio and put the activities
in the order they hear them. The video images
don’t match the audio, so they act as a distractor.
6. You can do all of this and more at Fun Land, so
visit our website and book your visit today! Fun
Land – the place where you never get bored!.
In pairs, students answer the question from the
instruction. Choose a few students and ask them
to answer the question aloud. Monitor their
answers.

collocation.
Extension:
Play a game with the students. Say a name of an
activity aloud without a verb and students need to
add the verb by saying it aloud, e.g. you say
A horse and students need to add ride. The
student who shouts the verb first, gets a point.
Count their points at the end of the game and
reward the winner.

Practice 4
Key:
ride + horse + picture / play + football + picture /
go + cycling + picture / join + a club + picture /
watch + a film + picture / take + photos + picture /
see + a show + picture / play + an instrument +
picture / go + fishing + picture
The screen is filled with a 6x5 grid. Grid squares
contain either a verb, a noun, or a picture
randomly distributed.
Grid contents are obscured until the student taps
‘Start’.
When the student taps ‘Start’ a score counter at
the top of the grid begins to tick down from
10000. Students must tap the verb, its noun
collocate, and the relevant picture to make a set.
These three grid spaces are then greyed out. The
score counter stops when all the sets have been
found. The faster students complete the task, the
higher their score.
Students should be able to repeat the game if
they wish.

English to take away
Audio 1:
Any voice: What are your favourite activities?
William: I like to take photos, go cycling, watch
films.
Audio2:
Any voice: What are your favourite activities?
Emma: I like to ride horses, see shows, watch
films!
Audio3:
Any voice: What are your favourite activities?
Harry: I like to play tennis, watch films, play
football!
Key:
The answer would be the most frequently
mentioned activity: watch films
Students listen to the three characters and decide
which activity is the most popular among them
(watch films).
Next, students work in pairs and tell each other
about their favourite activity of the ones you can
find in Fun Land.
Extension:
The final task requires students to conduct a mini
survey in their class. You could pool the results
and see what the most popular activities are
overall. Are the activities at Fun Land popular
enough to make it an attractive destination for the
students?
