Subject, Verb, Object: Notes

Every sentence must have a subject.

A subject is a noun or a group of words that together act like a noun.

In a sentence, a subject is something that performs an action. The subject
is the doer or the actor.
EXAMPLES:
1. I
2. He
3. She
4. We
5. They
6. It
7. A person’s name (Juan)
8. The name of a group of people (builders)
9. The name of a thing (The basketball)
10. The name of an idea (intelligence)

The action the subject does is the verb. Often the verb follows the subject.
EXAMPLES:

The object is somebody or something involved with the action but not
directly doing the action.
EXAMPLES:
1. Me
2. Him
3. Her
4. Us
5. Them
6. It
7. A person’s name (Juan)
8. The name of a group of people (builders)
9. The name of a thing (The basketball)
10. The name of an idea (intelligence)

Sometimes, the object comes __________________ the subject. But
even when this happens, the subject is still performing the action.
EXAMPLES:

“Don’t give it to him,” she said to the teacher.

On account of them, we can’t play football anymore since they took our
football.
