Learn how to find and use data for economic development, for understanding your local,
state, and regional economies, and for delving into segments of our national economy. Here
are a few examples of the online Census tools that will be presented 





Business & Industry portal provides current and historic data used to generate the
"Economic
Indicators" gauge on the Census website
Business Expenses gives data about the costs of doing business, such as operating
expenses, payroll, employer costs for such fringe benefits as health insurance and
pensions, contract labor costs, and taxes and license fees, and more.
Business Dynamics is the federal government's main source of data on "Job churn,"
which is data for the totality of job creation and destruction, job expansion and
contraction, number of establishments and their openings and closings, and number
of business startups and shutdowns. Business Dynamics also provides the data for the
Census "Job churn" mapping tool of OnTheMap.
Building Permits tracks local building permits data and provides.
Quarterly Retail E-commerce Sales charts Internet sales in the U.S.

the Census Bureau, Bureau of Economic Analysis, and Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Learn how to use this online tool developed by the US Census Bureau to map employment
and unemployment data and worker characteristics for your selected geographies. OnTheMap
focuses on where workers work and live. Five types of economic analysis available:





Area Profile - worker data by age group, earnings, industry sector, sex, race,
ethnicity, and educational attainment.
Area Comparison -same as above, but for multiple geographies for comparison.
Distance/Direction - gives distance in miles between work and home.
Destination - names the places of residence with the number of workers in each.
Inflow/Outflow - detailed data about the number of people who live and/or work in a
geography.
