About Me Miss Donahue 11 years teaching in public schools (9 years special education, this is my 2nd year kindergarten) 15 years total in education/childcare (I have also worked as a preschool teacher, substitute teacher, Title I teacher, nanny and afterschool program director.) Usually at school from 7:30 – 4:30. Extensive training in autism, behavioral interventions, literacy and special education. 1st Quarter: Reading • Identifies 10-20 letters • Knows about “Concepts of Print” (the cover of a book, print goes from left to right, able to point to words as they read, understanding first/last page, the meaning of a period. • Reads 5-10 high frequency words • Reads 0-8 letter sounds • Able to identify Rhymes and initial sounds Writing • Draws pictures, dictation and print to tell stories. • Spells 5 or more high frequency words. Math • Counts and keeps track of objects to 10 • Counts out objects to 10 • Uses characteristics to describe groups of objects. Work Skills and Social Growth • Works independently • Listen attentively • Cooperates • Shares • Takes turns • Respects others feelings, diversity, rights and property. 4th Quarter: Reading • Identifies ALL letters and letter sounds. • Is able to read at a Level D • Reads 25+ high frequency words • Able to segment individual sounds in words. Writing • Is able to write a sentence that is easy to read. • Spells 25 High Frequency Words • Is able to write across multiple pages. • Is able to sound out unknown words and spell them correctly. Math • Counts to 100 • Counts out 20 objects. • Keeps track of 20 objects. • Is able to figure out “1 more” and 1 less” • Label a quantity to 20. • Add and subtract to 10 Work Skills and Social Growth • Works independently • Listen attentively • Cooperates • Shares • Takes turns • Respects others feelings, diversity, rights and property. • Accepts redirection. Homework Homework will be sent home in a folder on Fridays and comes back the next Friday. Begins September 5th Supplied: pencil, crayons, scissors (occasionally), glue (occasionally). I will have a basket in my room where kids can put their folders. I will keep a sticker chart to track homework that is returned. The students will earn a special treat for every 5 stickers that they earn. Homework should take about 10-15 minutes. If it is taking a lot longer please let me know! One page per night. Even if they want to do it all. Why??? I am more interested in creating homework habits than seeing how quickly they can finish the work! Get in the routine of setting aside a little time each night for homework instead of one big clump of time once a week! What Can You Do at Home? READ! READ! READ! Kindergartners must be able to sit and listen to a whole story without interrupting! READ. EVERY. DAY. Let your kiddos read to you (even if they just make up a story to go with the pictures!) Practice letters Sort things by color/size/shape (clothes, food, toys, rubber bands) Websites: see handout Apps: ABC Magic Phonics, Kids ABC Trains, Mystery Math Town Have them make books and write stories. (Fold some pieces of paper, staple them together and tell them to draw/write a story!) MISC… Bullying happens. PLEASE report it to me! I am constantly on the lookout for problems but I can’t see everything. It is important that I know as soon as it happens so I can work on a solution. Lunchboxes.
