Today’s Goals and Agenda
• Goal: To get to know each other and some
procedures followed in Chemistry class.
• Agenda:
– Complete introduction sheets
– Review syllabus/safety contracts
Safety Contracts
• Safety Contracts must be signed and returned
on or before the first day of lab in order to
participate in lab activities
• This is a legal issue
• Safety is the NUMBER ONE priority in
Chemistry Lab!
• Please print your name CLEARLY on your
Safety Contract

Chemistry Syllabus
• General Classroom Rules
• All school rules and policies found in the N-Book apply in
this classroom
• Treat the teacher, other students and the classroom with
respect
• Be prepared for class (see below for requirements)
• Be on TIME!
• No food or drink is permitted at anytime in the classroom
• Leave bags, purses and head coverings in your locker.
• Cell phones and headphones MUST be put away during
class time and NOT on top of your desk!
• Follow all procedures that are outlined in the syllabus
Science Department Detentions
• Mondays and Thursdays after school, 2:35 –
3:05 pm
• Door closes at 2:35 promptly
• Bring your ID and some homework!
• No sleeping or talking
• Cell phones will NOT be permitted.

Textbooks - available for use during class or may
be checked out of the library
• If you need to borrow a pen/pencil, you must do
so within the first 5 minutes of class AND provide
collateral.

Hall Passes
• Hall passes are distributed at the beginning
and collected at the end of each marking
period
• Please put your name in ink, you will NOT get
a replacement if lost or stolen
• ID IS REQUIRED
Lateness
• You should be inside the room (past the door)
and in your seat when the bell rings.
• Late consequences (without a valid hall pass)
• Under one minute – you may trade a hall pass or serve
a detention
• 1 – 15 minutes late – detention will be assigned
• Over 15 minutes – referral will be submitted
• Work missed due to unexcused lateness or
cutting class is an automatic zero and cannot
be made up
Grading and Absences
• Grading – see syllabus
• Absences
– It is YOUR responsibility to make up missed
assignments in a timely fashion
– Tests, Quizzes and Class work can be made up,
Labs cannot. All work must be made up outside of
class time.
Fire Drills!
• During a fire drill
– All students calmly exit the classroom, turn left and go
down Stairwell 3 to the FIRST FLOOR
– Continue ACROSS the bridge and exit out of the
FORUM doors.
– Once outside locate the area for Classroom 235
– ALL students MUST REPORT to the teacher
immediately
– When the drill is over you are to report back to class,
NO WANDERING!
– Failure to comply will result in a discipline referral
A look ahead…
• Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays are 43 minute
classes
• Wednesdays and Thursdays are 86 minutes –
Lab Days!!

What are elements?
• Element – simplest form of matter that cannot
be broken down further without changing it’s
identity
• Every element can be found on the Periodic
Table (118) and each has its own unique
properties
