*********************************************************************************
CLASS CONDUCT - Please be considerate of others in the course. If you would rather talk to or text
your friends than listen to the lecture, please don't come to class. If I do not have your full attention
during the lecture sessions, I will ask you to leave. Please turn off cell phones during class.
Videotaping and recording are not allowed.
GRADING - 90 - 100% A, 78 - 89% B, 65 - 77% C, 55 - 64% D and below 55% is a fail.
THERE IS NO EXTRA CREDIT
READING AND WEBSITE RESOURCES - Reading assignments are very straight-forward. All the
resources you’ll need for this course are available on the Moodle site for this Bio 3 section. The site
includes extensive vocabulary lists and study sheets specific to each exam. These should be printed out
early on and reviewed as often as possible. When you feel you are fully prepared, there are also practice
exams to see if you have studied adequately. A practice exam is not an aid to understanding the
material. It is a tool to see if you are prepared for the real (and much more thorough) exam.
STUDY GROUPS - If you form a study group for this course (which I highly recommend!), you are
welcome to use the Bio 3 lab lobby to meet in small numbers as long as you don't disturb the people
working in the lab.
EXAMS - Exams are worth 75% of your final grade in the course. All exams count, a missed exam is a
zero. Exams are multiple choice (you will need scantron form #9783). Make-up exams are essay and
must be arranged with me PRIOR to the absence. Only one make-up during the semester will be
allowed. The only electronic device allowed during exams is a standard calculator. PHONES MUST
BE TURNED OFF AND PUT AWAY DURING ALL EXAMS AND QUIZZES.
The final exam will be just like the other exams, with the addition of twenty vocabulary questions. This
vocabulary is from the laboratory work since the beginning of the semester (see attached list). The final
is worth 20% of your grade.
LAB - The laboratory portion of the course constitutes 25% of your final grade in the course. I suggest
you have a calculator to use in lab each week.
Lab Manuals - Completing the lab manual accurately is essential to passing this course. The lab
manual will be collected at the end of the semester and is worth 30 points. The exercises MUST be
completed IN PENCIL. You may always have your lab checked by me before the end of each week
to make sure your lab will be worth full credit. No work from previous semesters will be accepted.
***A forged signature on any lab will result in a grade of zero for the entire lab manual.***
Lab Quizzes - Ten point quizzes will be given on the previous week's lab during the first five
minutes of the class on the day indicated. You will not be allowed to take the quiz if you did not
spend at least two hours on your lab or show up late to class. There are no make-up quizzes.
ATTENDANCE –
The official campus policy: Any student that misses more than two class meetings before the official
census on Monday of the third week, will be dropped without penalty. If you decide to drop the class
after the census, it is YOUR responsibility to drop on-line by May 8.
Mrs. Farris' policy: Students are expected to arrive on time and remain for the entire lecture. As a
laboratory class, your attendance is an extremely important part of passing this class. Your grade will
be adversely affected by excessive absences (more than three lectures) or by showing up late. If you
miss more than two labs without a valid excuse, you will receive a grade of "F" in Bio 3, even if you
have taken all the exams.
CHEATING - All Bio 3 instructors follow the policy of assigning a grade of zero on an exam or lab
quiz if a student is caught cheating in any way. Forging an instructor's signature on a lab or copying lab
answers from another student is inexcusable under ANY circumstances and will also result in a zero for
that lab grade. Two such zeros on lab and/or exam scores will result in the student being excluded from
Biology 3 with a grade of "F". Your signature on the first roll sheet indicates that you have read and
understood this cheating policy.
I will file an "Academic Dishonesty Report" form with the Vice President of Student Services if you
forge a signature or cheat on exams or quizzes. This report becomes part of your permanent
academic file.
FINAL EXAM VOCABULARY - By the end of the semester, you should be able to tell me which of
these words best describes a given example or situation. Remember, I will give you examples of these
words, NOT the textbook definition.
