Class meets: Sect. 1D: Online Catalog Description: A continuation of Acct 210 with emphasis on partnership and corporate structures, management decision-making, cost control, and other selected topics. Course Description: The first part of this course is a continuation the study of basic financial accounting principles started in the first semester. Managerial accounting concepts are covered in the latter part of the course. These concepts include procedures necessary to provide information used in making informed decisions in managing the daily operations of a business and controlling costs. Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course the student should be able to: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Be able to account for equity transactions related to partnerships and corporations. Be able to account for investments and long-term liabilities. Understand and be able to prepare a statement of cashflows. Be able to conduct basic financial statement analysis. Understand basic accounting methods used to provide information for managing daily operations of a business including controlling costs. Learning methods: Reading – It is expected the assigned chapters in the text will be read as necessary to complete the assigned homework. Videos – Narrated power point slides should be valuable tool to supplement the textbook reading and as a help in completing the assigned homework. These videos, prepared by the textbook publisher can be found in the content area of this course. I would also recommend Susan Crossan’s videos on YouTube. She has posted over 100 short videos on solving financial accounting problems. Discussion – Regular postings to a discussion board will not be a requirement of the course due to the nature of the material covered. At the same time you are encouraged to use the discussion board to post questions to your classmates. You are also encouraged to answer any questions that your classmates may post to the discussion board. Homework Problems – Completing homework is essential if you want to learn the material of this course. All graded homework will be completed in CNOW. Additional ungraded or “practice” assignments are also available in CNOW. There is a homework assignment for each of the ten chapters we will cover in this course. The due dates for the homework assignments can be found in a schedule included in this syllabus. These assignments and due dates can also be found in our CNOW course. Website – The publisher has provided additional learning tools for this text. These tools can be accessed at Student Resources. Many of these are also available in our course in D2L. Chat – I am also leaving the chat feature of D2L enabled for those who like to participate in synchronous discussion. I am not planning to be in the chat room at any specified time. Please email me with a request to enter the chat room at a specified time if you would like to chat with me. Course Requirements & Assessment: Your mastery of the course objectives will be assessed using the following methods. Student Profile – complete your student profile in D2L. Find yourself in the classlist and update your profile. Most of the information will be optional. You will receive 5 points for completing your profile if you include the following information: Contact info section – enter your phone number. Education and work section – enter the name of your university. About me section – future goals – stae your major, minor and career objective. All other info on the homepage will be optional. The profile must be completed by midnight, Tues, May 8th if you want to receive the 5 points for this assignment. Homework –There are a total of 11 graded homework assignments in our CNOW course. There is one graded homework assignment for each of the 10 chapters we cover in this course plus there is one assignment covering CNOW. Each is worth a maximum of 10 points. Your best 10 homework assignment grades (you get to drop one homework assignment grade) will be used in the determination of your course grade. Exams – Five exams have been scheduled for this course. These exams are found in the “Quizzes” section of D2L. Please see your homework schedule for the days and times of these exams. The exams will be available and must be taken between noon and 11:59 PM on the day scheduled. You must use Respondus Lockdown Browser to access and take these exams. These exams are NOT open note/book/friend/etc. You are not allowed any outside resource while taking these exams. You will find a series of “Practice Quizzes” in the quizzes section of this course. There should be two of these practice quizzes for each chapter in the text. One will be a multiple-choice quiz and the other will be a t-f quiz. Respondus Lockdown Browser is not used to take these quizzes. These quizzes are optional. You may take these quizzes multiple times. These quizzes are not grade or timed. Makeup work – Homework – N/A – Because homework is completed and submitted online class absences should not affect completing and submitting homework on time. Makeup for homework should not be necessary. Makeup work – Tests – Rarely should it be necessary for a student to miss a scheduled exam. If the absence is due to an emergency or if the student has contacted the instructor prior to the exam they may be allowed to make alternate arrangements for taking the exam.
