Lab Agenda:

IV.
Prepare lab station for dissection: pan, tools, paper towels, lab manual. Remember to wear
your gloves, goggles, and face mask (if desired).
Bring cat specimen to your lab station, untie bag, and place on dissection pan. Save the
body bag, rubber band, and toe tag to be reused at the end of class.
Open the skin of the cat. Finish any remaining dissections from the previous lab day.
a. Jaw/mandible/throat muscles
b. Abdominal muscles - superficial
c. Shoulder/Upper arm muscles
Turn to page 709-710 of your dissection manual and identify and describe the anatomy
listed below. Follow your lab manual to identify the direction of muscle fibers and cleavage
lines. You will need to cut through layers of muscle to visualize the deeper muscles. You
should be able to visualize 3 different muscle layers in the thoracic cavity. If you cut
carefully, on one side of the cat, you should be able to expose each of these layers and fold
them back (reflect them) as you go. The muscles listed here are in addition to the muscles
identified in Lab 2. Review the superficial muscles from Lab 2 before dissecting deeper to
reveal the deep muscle layers.
