Biology 207 Laboratory, Fall 2008 Room 149, Gilmer Hall Instructor: Ted Homyk; phone 982-5699, e-mail th2j@virginia.edu Office Hours: Room P211, Center for Biological Timing (CBT), between Gilmer Hall and the Chemistry Building; 10:00AM–12 Noon, Mon and Fri, 4:15 - 5:15 PM, Wed. Lab Manual: Human Anatomy and Physiology Laboratory Manual, Pig Version, 8th or 9th edition, E. Marieb. Grading and Examinations: The final laboratory grade will be determined as the average of three practical laboratory examinations. Each practical examination will consist of 10-12 stations, each reproducing some aspect of relevant laboratory exercises. Reproductions will include diagrams, models, dissections, tissue slides, instruments and recreations of clinical, physiological and biochemical exercises. Questions at each station will require short answer, multiple choice, true/false, simple identification, brief definition, description and explanation responses. Attendance: A limited number of students can be accommodated to make up a missed lab period during another lab period meeting that week. Students who miss a second regular lab period without making it up may be required to complete and turn in a computer simulation exercise, chosen by the instructor, before they will be assigned a final letter grade. The additional exercise will not be considered in that grade. Reference Letters: I do not write reference letters for students, who take only the laboratory portion of the course. Those taking the lecture should refer to the lecture syllabus. Laboratory Rules and Safety Regulations: Students are expected to practice safety in the laboratory at all times. State regulations prohibit smoking, drinking, or eating in the laboratory. For the safety of personnel who perform the important tasks of cleaning the laboratory, state regulations also prohibit the disposal of hazardous waste, sharp objects, or objects, which could break to produce sharp edges, in ordinary containers. Instruction on the disposal of these items will be provided. Students will also be responsible for wiping down areas of their lab benches where they used chemicals or dissected specimens, as a courtesy for others who will use the same space. Students will also be expected to use the microscope as instructed and to refrain from marking laboratory models with pens or pencils.
