BSN PROGRAM NCLEX-RN STATISTICS
09/11
DEFINITIONS
At Risk: A student is deemed “at risk” if they possess the following:

a nursing grade point average (NGPA) less than 3.25 at the conclusion of the semester prior
to graduation AND/OR

a score of 899 or less on the HESI Exit Exam (E2) on the first attempt

With the graduating class of May 2011, a benchmark of 900 will be required for
successful completion of the HESI E2.

The ATI RN Comprehensive Predictor Examination was replaced by the HESI E2
beginning in May 2011 (see archived copy of Definitions and Parameters dated 10/2009).
o Nibert, Young, and Britt (2008) reported that a majority of the schools surveyed
for their study used a HESI E2 benchmark score of 85 (850) as their minimally
acceptable score. The authors advised, however, that schools with fewer students
enrolled are less likely to be able to tolerate any increased risk of NCLEX failure.
Because of that risk, and the ensuing scrutiny that often results, a more
conservative approach should be considered. Schools with smaller enrollments or
graduating fewer students may want to consider a HESI benchmark of 900.
Nibert, A., Young, A., & Britt, R. (2008). The HESI exit exam: Progression
benchmark and remediation guide. CIN: Computers, Informatics, Nursing. 26 (5),
70S-74S.
October/December Graduates: Data for October and December graduates is factored into the
academic year graduation class.

Example: December 2009 graduate data is compiled into the Class of 2010 data; rationale is
that these graduates are first eligible to take their NCLEX exam in 2010 and are encompassed
in the May 2010 commencement proceedings.

Example: October 2010 graduate data is compiled into the Class of 2011 data.
Experience Summary: Summaries will reflect percentages to the first (1st) decimal point with
applicable rounding.

Examples: 85.78 will be displayed at 85.8; 97.45 will be displayed at 97.5; 88.33 will be
displayed as 88.3
SOURCES
College: Student information including biographic, demographic, nursing GPA (NGPA), etc. is
obtained from the student’s official record at the College. The following are notable exceptions:

NCLEX-RN Review Course: Student participation in a NCLEX-RN review course is self
reported; in addition, the nature of the review is variable in respect to vendor (Kaplan, Hurst,
etc.), format (class/online/both, etc.), and timing.

NCLEX-RN Test Date: Test date may also be self reported in many instances. In some cases
this information is available through the State Licensing Board, dependent on the State.

NCLEX-RN Test Outcome: Outcome may also be self reported. Outcome may be able to be
confirmed by the State Licensing Board, again, dependent on the State.
National Council of State Board of Nursing (NCSBN): The National Council provides pass rate
information via a number of reports. Based on timing of data availability from the Council via these
various reports and to provide consistency with reporting, the data provided in the Council’s NCLEX
Examination Pass Rates is used in College reporting.

“1st Time Pass Rate - National” is taken from the Council’s “NCLEX Examination Pass
Rates”. The NCLEX-RN Total First Time, US Educated is recorded on the report.
State of Wisconsin Department of Regulation and Licensing (Board of Nursing): The Education
and Examination Office provides Degree Analysis (RN and LPN) reports on a rolling quarter basis.

“1st Time Pass Rate - Wisconsin All” and “1st Time Pass Rate - Wisconsin BSN” are both
reported from the State of Wisconsin reports provided on the rolling 8 quarter basis.
o Wisconsin All encompasses both the associate degree in nursing and baccalaureate
degree in nursing institutions
o Data for the Summary report is tabulated from the rolling 8 quarter reports to reflect
the calendar year period
o Data for the Rank report is based entirely on the current rolling 8 quarter report
