[Title of Paper]
[Your Name]
Liberty University Online
[Please read the APA Manual pp. 23-25].
Your title page must include the running head, title of your paper, your name, and the
name of your university. The running head (the short title of your paper that appears in the
header) is to be an abbreviation of your title and is to be less than 50 characters long (ALL
CAPITALS).
Note: the actual words “Running head” only appear on the Title page, and not on
subsequent pages. To enter your running head, just double click on the header section above.
Replace the text highlighted in yellow with your running head, and then delete the text in red.
Then double click the main body of this page to exit the header section.
Next, go to page two of this template and double click on the header. Replace the text
highlighted in yellow with your running head. The running head will then be automatically
replaced on all subsequent pages. Double click on the text body to complete the change.
Next, enter (and replace) the additional information required on this page (highlighted in
yellow) with your own information. (See page 41 of the APA manual to have a look at a sample
paper.)
This template is formatted according to APA Style guidelines, with one inch top, bottom,
left, and right margins; Times New Roman font in 12 point; double-spaced; aligned flush left;
and paragraphs indented 5-7 spaces. The page number appears one inch from the right edge on
the first line of each page.
You can use this template to help you develop your journal article review.
[The font size used for these comments (in red) is smaller to fit more information on each page.]

Summary
Type the title of your paper again at the top of this page. Normally, you would follow the
title with an introduction to your paper. You do not need to do an introduction for this journal
article review.
In the Summary section, develop a 1-page summary of the article in your own words. Do
not copy and paste from the journal article—this is plagiarism! Provide a brief description of the
topic under consideration in the article. If the article describes a research study, include brief
statements about the hypotheses, methods, results, discussion, and implications. If any test
measures or statistical methods used are given in the article, do not provide detailed
descriptions of these. Short direct quotations from the article are acceptable, but they may not
be more than 1–2 sentences each and must be properly cited. This section is the foundation of
your Journal Article Review (at least a third of your paper). Make sure you include the core
points from the article, even if it means a longer section.
Do not reference any additional articles in your summary. Remove the information in
red after you have read it.
Reflection
In your own words, reflect (in one page) on the article. Appropriate comments for this part of the
paper could include, but are not limited to:

Your initial response to the article,

Comments (in your own words) regarding the study's design or methodology (if any),

Insights you gained from reading the article,

Your reasons for being interested in this particular article,


Any other readings that you may plan to do based upon having read the article,

Other thoughts you have that might further enhance the discussion of your article.
This section should constitute approximately a third of your Journal Article Review.
Again, do not reference any other article. Remove this message in red after you have read it.
Application
In the final section, show how the information you have learned from your article can be
applied to an actual counseling situation/scenario. The counseling scenario can be based on a
real life experience or on a hypothetical clinical situation. When applying knowledge from your
article to your counseling scenario, be specific and don’t just generalize. Utilize citations where
appropriate. This section should be a minimum of one page.

References
For the journal article review, you will only need to provide the reference for the article you
are reviewing. However, I am providing instructions on how to enter references into Microsoft
Word’s (2010) “References.” For examples of references that have been properly formatted,
please see the bibliography that was prepared for this course.
