UNIT 5: SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTION &
ENLIGHTENMENT
 The Scientific Revolution-A period after the
Middle Ages when lots of new ideas in Math, Science,
Physics, and Philosophy came into being. (When
people ceased to be afraid of the mysteries of "why.")
 Galileo Galilei-a scientist who used
experimentation and observation to the old and
accepted beliefs of physics and astronomy.
 Isaac Newton-English scientist; established
principles of motion and defined forces of gravity. He
also established a philosophy- any rational man was
in charge of his own world.
 Disenchantment-disbelief in superstition;
knowledge and science (can be good or bad)
 Diesm-the idea of a "clockmaker" absent God who
makes the world, then lets it run
 geocentric theory—moon, sun, planets revolve
around earth.
 heliocentric theory—planets revolve around the
sun. Developed by Copernicus.
 Scientific Method- a method of research in
which a problem is identified, data is gathered, a
hypothesis is formulated and the hypothesis is
tested.
Activity: Create a Timeline
Directions: Create a timeline starting with The RenaissanceAge of
Exploration Scientific Revolution
You must include 3 important dates and events from the Renaissance
and Age of Exploration.
For Scientific Revolution, you will only list the date it begins. Once we
learn more about it, you will revisit this and add to it.
