It may prove helpful as you complete your application. “As a member of a TOPIC RAP, you are also part of an exciting initiative at UMass Amherst called Global Pathways Student - GPS. This program is designed to provide you with information about a variety of opportunities that will enhance your college experience and enable you to develop the skills, tools and knowledge to take charge of your college education and be an active and engaged member of the global community upon graduation. GPS goals and objectives are infused into the RAP seminar curriculum. Through the seminar activities: reading, discussing, reflecting, investigating, and participating in events you will develop and enhance skills that reflect the mission of the GPS program. As GPS scholars, you will be encouraged to: Develop/improve your ability to understand and respect others’ points of view. Attend cultural activities – learn about food, music, literature from around the world. Attend GPS student panels to hear upper class students’ stories about their personal experiences in exchange programs, internships and service learning sites. Articulate connections between the information you are learning in different classes with experiences in your life. Increase your ability to ask questions that demonstrate awareness/concern for other peoples/communities/cultures. EXPAND YOUR ACADEMIC HORIZONS WITH Global Pathways Student - GPS GPS Student Panels provide a chance for you to hear stories from upper class students about the experiences they had with various opportunities, including those listed below. We hope this will help you realize that there are many wonderful options for you to choose from – and many are easier to participate in than you might have imagined! Five College Interchange: UMass Amherst undergraduates who meet basic participation criteria (be a second semester freshman - or beyond – AND be in good academic standing AND be registered in at least one 3-credit UMass course) can enroll in courses at Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges (no fee). Domestic Exchange: Domestic Exchanges permit UMass students to spend a semester or a year at another college or university through the National Student Exchange (NSE) program.
