Foreshadowing: Chapters 1-6: Foreshadowing is a regular feature there no surprises in this novel! Chapter 1: Hints in the first chapter foreshadow the pattern of the novel: the transience of comradeship, the glamour of the island is a temporary garment, the conch is a “toy”, the mock hunt becomes all too real. Indications of darkness to come in the beast images Jack brings the choir including Simon “fumbling” “the creature” Simon faints – breaks away from choir, later won’t join them hunting. “When they had fallen apart…” pg 29. Their society does fall apart later…Chp8 “What makes things fall apart like they do?” (Ralph to Piggy) Push rock over the cliff an accident in Coral Island, deliberate here Candle buds reaction of Ralph, Simon, Jack – Hack’s destructive tendencies alluded to p33 Next time there would be no mercy.
